Focus on What You Can Do
  April 2011

Aloha,

If change was easy, we would all be doing it.  And when it comes to changing our organizational styles, habits and behaviors, there are things that seem to slow us down or completely stop us in our tracks.  For many individuals that are chronically disorganized (life-long challenge to get and stay organized), it may be caused by different learning styles, different decision making abilities, and different health issues.  A specific health issue I want to address this month is depression.  Depression can cause disorganization and it can effect your attempts to get and stay organized. I know this personally, and I'm now dealing with this issue with my brother.  Depression can make it feel impossible to do even the most basic tasks.

I'm not a doctor and not even extremely knowledgeable about the wide field of depression, but here is what has worked for me:
  1. Take your medication and supplements that you've been prescribed or that you've found helpful in the past.  If you need help remembering to take it, set your phone alarm (see 15 Minutes or Less below).
  2. Ask for help.  If you're not willing to go in just for the depression, then go in for that cold, sinus infection or tooth ache and mention that you are also feeling depressed.  I went into my Naturopath for a sinus infection and broke down and admitted I was depressed.  Turns out that depression is common with sinus infections.  She helped me with the infection and she gave me some adrenal support, which honestly has been the most amazing thing for me.  All I can say is that I now understand what sanity feels like.
  3. Focus on small steps you can take.  If processing the mail is overwhelming, then your goal is to get the mail in one basket instead of spread throughout the house.  Focus on Inch Pebbles instead of Milestones (I didn't come up with that, but it is so true.) Action may be difficult, but even small actions can get you moving forward.
  4. Focus on the positive. It's not easy.  It's taken me a lifetime to build that habit and I'm still working on it.  Here is the simple reason I focus on the positive: When I focus on the positive, I believe that what I do matters, even if what I can do is small.  When I focus on the negative, I throw my hands up in the air and say "why bother".  So for me, it's a no brainer -- focus on the positive.
I can't help you with the depression, but I can help you to take the small steps that will move you out of overwhelm, and I can definitely help you focus on the positive.  I can help over the phone (almost anywhere) and in-person (Big Island residents only).  To schedule your 30-minute complimentary session (phone only), click the button below and...

15 Minutes or Less
  • Set your phone's alarm to remind you to take your medicine, vitamins and even stretch breaks.  I've set my reminder to bark (because I ignore most alarms, but I always pay attention when my dogs bark).  My sister sets her phone alarm to a dhuck quack (what better sound is there?).
  • Build your "No" muscle by listening to my 10 minute audio clip www.dhucks.com/buildingyournomuscle.html.
  • Educate yourself and your friends & family about your depression.  A great resource:  www.juliefast.com
  • Go through your April IDEA Box file.
  • Preparedness Tip -- Fill your car with gas before it gets below half.  Even now that gas prices are higher, making sure your car is full saves time sitting in the long lines during an emergency.
Recycling Your Eyeglasses
If you have eyeglasses you aren't using, donate them to the Lions Club Sight Program.  Your local Lions club may have a drop off location, a Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center or you can mail them.  Click on this link to get more information from Lions Club International.

Organizing Your Recipes
The Organizing Your Recipe Workshop was delayed because I was unable to get the organizers that I had initially intended to.  However, I have a great opportunity this next week to find even better material for your recipes -- I will be attending the National Association of Professional Organizer's annual conference in San Diego.  And I plan to search the various booths at the Expo to see what's new and what may work even better.  I'm going to attempt to tweet and post on Facebook throughout the conference, sharing ideas and tips as I go.  Follow me if you want to be kept updated.
