Small Steps

A journey of a thousand miles begins with
a single step.

Try This:

I know what happens to good intentions of moving more on a vacation -- they're like battle plans -- they don't survive first contact with the enemy.  But if you don't plan to get more activity, you most certainly won't get any.

So, as usual, I am sharing plans for my upcoming trip.  There are several different challenges:

The first challenge will be in San Diego with hotel conference food, a packed schedule and meeting new people over dinner and drinks .  In fact, a group of us (from Hawaii) are going to a baseball game on Friday night for dinner and fun.  Want to know more about what I'll be doing at the conference? The second challenge will be the actual vacation part.  Though less structured, I will have a "vacation" mentality in a big way, since this will be the first time in 4 months I'll get to see my husband;  he's been working on the mainland since just after Thanksgiving. Together, we've been known to help each other make the "better choice", but we've also been known to cave in and go a bit wild.

The third  challenge will be in Montana helping my brother get his house cleaned and ready to sell.  Lots to do and a short time to accomplish it could make the excuse of "I'm too busy to take a break and go for a walk" a likely thought.

Here are my solutions:

  • Do a little internet searching BEFORE I leave to see where some interesting walking tours are located, and if there is a nearby grocery store to buy fresh fruit and veggies.
  • Take some easily packed, healthier choice snacks with me.
  • Choose to pay $15 extra a day to get a full breakfast, use of the fitness center and internet access.  My intentions:
    • load up on fruits and some good protein at breakfast to fuel me through the morning so that I'm won't grab the pastries.
    • do 15 minutes on the elliptical machines in the fitness center.
    • use the internet to find bus schedules to see the sites (via walking).
  • Take advantage of the breaks between sessions to walk the conference grounds.  Invite my new contacts to walk with me.
  • Before dinner, take a short or long break to explore the resort grounds.
  • Wear my pedometer  for feedback and encouragement.
  • Attend a Weight Watcher meeting in each location for support and to re-focus.  I found one that's walking distance from my hotel.
  • Set my phone alarm to remind me to take a break from organizing and walk around the block.
Can I move more on this trip?  Yes, I can!!  And I don't have to be perfectly on plan.  Just being aware and taking advantage of the small opportunities I have will help me move more.

What plans can you make to move more on your next trip?
How'd it go?

I've lost weight twice before but I gained it back eventually.  This time I'm determined to keep it off and I realize that it's not a one time fix.  It's a journey.  And as with all great journeys, you learn as you go.

I take these small steps with you each week because I also need to build and maintain the habits and behaviors that support me in my journey.  Thanks for joining me each week.  Have fun and enjoy your life!
