Because I have a tendency to get portion creep, I need to use measuring cups, measuring spoons and a scale to help me determine the appropriate serving size.  But if those tools aren't close at hand and easy to grab, I use whatever is available and I end up eating more, sometimes much more.  So I have portion control assistance tools (measuring devices) everywhere.  I put them in drawers near where I serve the food and in canisters by the stove.  I even have a special measuring spoon that stays with my coffee supplies so that I can measure out the half and half for my coffee.  Half and half in my coffee will be one of the last things I ever give up, but I definitely need to know exactly how much I'm using.

This week, pull out your 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup and 1 cup measuring spoons or serving sets and place them close to where you serve the food, so they're easy to grab.  Also put your scale in a convenient and easy to access location.  Buy additional measuring cups/spoons if needed, so that you can have the right size every time.  Some shapes work better than others.  For me, the longer handles make it easier to scoop up soups and sauces.

If you purchased a set of measuring/serving spoons and they are still in the box, now would be a great time to get them out.  I know that some don't fit in a drawer easily; try storing them in a basket or canister on the counter near where you would use them.  If they are easy to access they are more likely to be used.  And when an item is used often, it deserves to have a more accessible storage space.  Make determining your portion size as easy as possible and set yourself up for success.
