Aloha,
FOCUS
That's my motto for November. In order for me to create what I want in 2011, I need to stay focused on one key project at a time. Otherwise I'll be spreading my energy, my time and my efforts too thin and end up in overwhelm and going nowhere. So here are the things I'm doing to stay FOCUSED.
|
| Pick ONE (for now) | | Many of us tend to have multiple interests, responsibilities and brilliant ideas. A client referred to life and all the opportunities out there as a buffet. So many different possibilities and it all looks wonderful. But if we heap our plate with too many ideas, hobbies, projects or responsibilities on the first trip, we end up with too much on our plate, we don't make progress on what's important to us and we fail to enjoy any of it.
So pick one area of your life: organizing your home;managing your time; growing your business; or enhancing your life. What's one project, hobby, goal, or activity that you can FOCUS on this month? And I really do mean only for this month. Don't worry about next month or next year. You can re-focus your efforts on another project in December.
For those who have a hard time picking just one project to focus on, this book may be just for you...

Get Clear
| |
So you've picked one project or activity you want to focus on for now. Before you begin, get clear on your desired outcome. What is your vision of living in that space or using that area? How will you and your life be different when this project is completed? How will it feel just to start? To see progress? Get clear on what's in it for you. Now, make a visual reminder(s) of your project and post it where you can see it every day. Make a sign; post notes; put it in writing or in pictures. Seeing your reminders will keep you focused and help you choose where you spend your time and effort. It can help to write about what you want and why. Here's a resource that will help you get clear and stay focused on what you want...

Determine What's Good Enough
| | You're focused on ONE project for now. You've gotten clear on what you want, now identify what is good enough. Determine what are the minimum requirements for your project to succeed. It's okay to want that project to shine, but if you never meet the basic needs, you never accomplish the goal.
Post that list of minimum requirements in the area you will be working. This will help remind you to focus on accomplishing the basics and saving the finishing touches and flourishes for later (if you have time and energy).
If you are chronically disorganized, it is highly likely that you are a perfectionist. Yes, that's right, disorganization often occurs because you feel the need to have it perfect, and when it isn't perfect immediately or easily, you may give up mid-way and stop doing anything. Here's my recommended resource for learning how to deal with your inner perfectionist...
|
| Now Go and Have Fun | | Take action. Stop planning, thinking or worrying. Get up and put one thing away, let go of one thing, or toss one thing. Do something. Take some action. Take one small step and you will move forward and it may energize you enough to keep on going. Focus on what's in front of you and keep at it. Don't worry about how far you've come. Don't worry about how much further you need to go. Focus on action today, right now. Don't worry about getting it perfect -- it won't be. That's okay. Now go, do one thing and have some fun with it.

Dhuck Your Responsibilties
| |
Life will continue to happen, people will continue to ask you for favors, but if you keep focused on your one project this month you can choose where to spend your time and energy. If you think you don't have enough time to do it all, you're right. So consider finding the time in your schedule to accomplish what you want by dhucking your responsibilities.

Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.
