Small Steps

A journey of a thousand miles begins with
a single step.

Try This:

Several weeks ago,  I talked about soothing rituals.  I want to extend that idea into this week's topic on celebration.  I know the prevailing wisdom tells us not to celebrate with food, but I have to say it's a hard habit to break.  After all we, as a species, have been celebrating with food for thousands of years.  So instead of trying to break this habit, I'm suggesting that we find ways to work with it by celebrating with food through the  ritual of giving thanks.

We celebrate because there is something special that has occurred.   Maybe we or those we love are starting a new journey, maybe we overcame a challenge, maybe we achieved a goal, maybe we just made it through another day.  Let's not wait for Thanksgiving to offer our gratitude
for the food that we choose, for all those who made that food possible and for those we share it with today.

This week I will celebrate with food.  I will celebrate in a mindful state of gratitude.  And I will offer a moment of thanks for all that I have including the food I've chosen.

How will you celebrate with food this week?

PS -- If your dinner grows cold as you list all the individuals who had a part in the food (the farmer, the pickers, the workers in the factory who ground, mixed and added the ingredients that you can't pronounce, the drivers who delivered it to the factory and the warehouse and then the store, and the advertising executive who got you to buy it) you might reconsider choosing more whole foods and locally grown when you can.
How'd it go?

Highlights from the Research Project on Gratitude and Thankfulness, Emmons & McCullough, 2003
  • In an experimental comparison, those who kept gratitude journals on a weekly basis exercised more regularly, reported fewer physical symptoms, felt better about their lives as a whole, and were more optimistic about the upcoming week compared to those who recorded hassles or neutral life events

Quote:

Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation.

My Journey:
Shawndra's AFTER
I've lost weight twice before but I gained it back eventually.  This time I'm determined to keep it off and I realize that it's not a one time fix.  It's a journey.  And as with all great journeys, you learn as you go.

I take these small steps with you each week because I also need to build and maintain the habits and behaviors that support me in my journey.  Thanks for joining me each week.  Have fun and enjoy your life!
