Small Steps
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

| | There are many reasons to "eat local", such as sustainability, food security, supporting local farmers, keeping the money in your community, as well as nutrition. I am trying to buy & eat local for all those reasons, but the main reason I "eat local" is that I feel more connected to, and aware of, what I eat. And the more I am connected, the less mindless eating I do. Besides, it tastes better I think.
KanuHawaii.com offers a challenge to us to eat local, September 26 through October 2. Some options could be:
- eating only locally grown food for a week;
- eating only locally grown food for a day;
- committing to spending 10% of your food budget on locally grown food; or
- host an "eat local" potluck with friends and family and neighbors.
I'm not quite ready to eat only local food for a week, but I am committing to planning my meals around local grown food for the week. So, though I am not limiting myself to only locally grown, I think I can get quite a bit in.
I'll be sharing my local foods journey on my Eat Local blog, but here's where I'll be getting most of my food this week:
Farmers' Market -- Hilo Coffee Mill's Market @ The Mill for eggs, vegetables, fruits, meat, pickled daikon and who knows what else. Grocery Store -- KTA carries Mountain Apple Brand and other locally grown and/or produced milk, goat cheese, eggs, meat, vegetables, sprouts, bananas, and more. Papa'a Palaoa Bakery (Mountain View or Market @ The Mill) for bread Friends, neighbors & co-workers for whatever they have to share. My backyard for avocados, herbs, papayas and eventually figs.
How can you "eat local" this week?
