Small Steps

A journey of a thousand miles begins with
a single step.

Try This:

If you spend your day sitting at a desk and the most activity that you get is lifting the phone or moving your mouse, here are some ways that you can fit more activity into your work day:
  • Have a 'walk and talk'.  If you have a meeting with someone tomorrow or next week, suggest a walk around the block or meet at a convenient park or trail.  Remember to bring comfortable shoes and send them a reminder too.  You don't have to break a sweat, just take a stroll.
  • Take your breaks and walk the building, the stairs or around the block.  It's a great way to get the creative juices flowing.
  • If you tend to lose track of time and forget to take breaks, set a reminder on your computer or phone.
  • Get others at work involved.  Talk with your HR to see if they can help with organizing an activity or event around worksite wellness.
  • Stand up when you're on the phone.  Simply standing in one place burns more calories than sitting.
  • Have a set of light weights handy and use them when you're on the phone.
  • Get to work 15 minutes earlier, park further away and take a 10 minute stroll before work starts. You can take a short stroll before you get in your car to head home, too.
  • Don't let your fear of doing something different stand between you and better health.

Can you start being more active at work this week?
How'd it go?

Did you begin to live as the future you?

My Journey:
Shawndra's AFTER
I've lost weight twice before but I gained it back eventually.  This time I'm determined to keep it off and I realize that it's not a one time fix.  It's a journey.  And as with all great journeys, you learn as you go.

I take these small steps with you each week because I also need to build and maintain the habits and behaviors that support me in my journey.  Thanks for joining me each week.  Have fun and enjoy your life!
