If you spend your day sitting at a desk and the most activity that you get is lifting the phone or moving your mouse, here are some ways that you can fit more activity into your work day:
- Have a 'walk and talk'. If you have a meeting with someone tomorrow or next week, suggest a walk around the block or meet at a convenient park or trail. Remember to bring comfortable shoes and send them a reminder too. You don't have to break a sweat, just take a stroll.
- Take your breaks and walk the building, the stairs or around the block. It's a great way to get the creative juices flowing.
- If you tend to lose track of time and forget to take breaks, set a reminder on your computer or phone.
- Get others at work involved. Talk with your HR to see if they can help with organizing an activity or event around worksite wellness.
- Stand up when you're on the phone. Simply standing in one place burns more calories than sitting.
- Have a set of light weights handy and use them when you're on the phone.
- Get to work 15 minutes earlier, park further away and take a 10 minute stroll before work starts. You can take a short stroll before you get in your car to head home, too.
- Don't let your fear of doing something different stand between you and better health.
Can you start being more active at work this week?
