Small Steps

A journey of a thousand miles begins with
a single step.

Try This:

Thanks to all those who responded to my request for ideas on activities to do with friends and family that aren't focused on eating and drinking.  This will come in handy next week with my houseguest, and every day with my family.  This can also make a great list to put on the refrigerator for those times when you can't think of anything to do and start eating out of boredom.

Anyplace ideas...
  • Shop the consignment stores or resale shops one day
  • Shopping, at a book store...clothing store...art store....
  • Wander through an art supply, office supply store or hobby store
  • Look through this year's back-to-school supplies and remember when...
  • Find a sidewalk to draw on... using chalk
  • Look for the next cultural festival in your area
  • Take a class in something you haven't done before
  • Join or visit a new group you're interested in
  • Get involved, go to a town meeting or planning commission meeting
  • Keep track of the flowers that bloom each month... make a photo book
  • Sit by the water with a book and watch folks fish (out of the corner of your eye)
  • Watch the full moon come up in the East each month and see how the course changes during the the year
  • Help someone.  An older person at the market or a young mother with a stroller and small children get through the door... and track how many times a day can you do that.
  • Smile and keep track of how many people smile back. Make it a game.
  • Ride a bike
  • Weed a garden, yours or someone else's
  • Volunteer at a school or at a hospital or at a church or at some venue or event.  Give a little of your time if you don't have anything to do and get a sense of purpose.
  • Sweep your sidewalk or driveway, or someone else's
  • Do something for someone anonymously.
  • Walk a dog
  • Pet a cat
  • Visit the library, any library
  • Reading
  • Make greeting cards
  • Do art...make collages...paint or draw...
  • Sew
  • Garden (which in Hawaii is great exercise as it may involve moving rocks or dirt, weeding, pruning, mowing, weed whacking....)
  • Work on a hobby (art for me and model trains for spouse)
  • Play board games or cards
  • Play bocce, horseshoes, croquet
  • Visit historic buildings
  • Get a pedicure together

Big Island ideas...

  • Visit the planetarium at 'Imiloa
  • Ride up to Mauna Kea and keep track of wildlife you see along the way
  • Visit Akatsuka (orchids) on the way to Volcano
  • Kaumana Caves for a hike, introducing your friends to Ohi'a, liko lehua and lambs' ears
  • Stroll up and down Hilo Bay while watching the Big Island canoe regatta (or whatever event is currently happening)
Any ideas sound interesting?  Will you try one?
How'd it go?

Did you get more activity in you day?

My Journey:
Shawndra's AFTER
I've lost weight twice before but I gained it back eventually.  This time I'm determined to keep it off and I realize that it's not a one time fix.  It's a journey.  And as with all great journeys, you learn as you go.

I take these small steps with you each week because I also need to build and maintain the habits and behaviors that support me in my journey.  Thanks for joining me each week.  Have fun and enjoy your life!
