As my husband and I were sitting in the airport, at the start of our trip last week, I shared my fairly reasonable and definitely doable intention of maintaining my healthy weight while on a trip to celebrate with family. My plan was to leave a little behind at every meal (more than just the parsley) and get 10,000 steps a day.
I knew that this trip would be filled with desserts, particularly ice cream, restaurant meals and family picnics. I knew that I would eat differently and more than usual. But I accepted that I didn't have to eat all that was handed to me nor did I have to spend the whole trip sitting. I got in an average of 10,600 steps each day, left something behind at every restaurant meal, had more ice cream than even I thought I would, and I only gained 1.2 pounds. Could I have done the trip differently and not gained any weight? Certainly. But I admitted from the start that I wanted to enjoy that ice cream and those restaurants and was willing and ready to immediately start eating a more appropriately sized portion when I returned home.
So I call the whole trip a success.
What plans are you willing to make for your next trip?
