We are so busy doing more in our day (taking on more projects, signing up for more activities, saying yes to more requests, gathering more information) that we no longer make the time to be more. When was the last time you took 30 minutes (or 15 or even 2 minutes) to just be? When was the last time you enjoyed a sunset, the birds singing around you or the wind sighing in the trees? When was the last time you stopped and smelled the gardenias? When was the last time you smiled just because that moment made you happy? I live 15 minutes from the ocean and it's only now, after 8 years, that I am actually starting to take advantage of it.
Years ago someone pointed out to me that we are not human doings, we are human beings, but it's taken me this long to make being a priority. I'm not sure what that means exactly, but I'm willing to find out. For me, it might be pausing a moment to stop doing whatever I'm doing, take a deep breath, and notice the beauty that surrounds me. Maybe it means getting to my walking group 10 minutes early so that I can sip my coffee by the ocean. It definitely means writing this while listening to the waves crash against the shore.
Can you take the next few minutes to just be?
