Small Steps

A journey of a thousand miles begins with
a single step.

Try This:

I participated in a great class this week, and though the class was on strategies to help organizing clients that have depression move forward, it really was applicable to much more in my life.  Julie Fast, the presenter, shared personal strategies that got her through building a business and a life and writing books while coping with the symptoms and challenges of being bipolar.  Her primary mantra was to do it anyway.  Get out of bed even if she didn't think she could.  Write a chapter even if she didn't want to.  Go for a walk even if that was the last thing she wanted to do.   Do it, even if she didn't feel motivated.

She realized that her mind and her body were two separate things and even though her mind was unmotivated, de-energized and even downright negative, if she just did it anyway, her body was capable of accomplishing what her mind would not.  (She also shared a mantra that she uses to remind herself that her thoughts are real, but not accurate when her illness is making her doubt herself.  I just had to use it for this week's quote.)

Over the years I've relied a lot on feeling motivated in order to do some things.  But this week I am going to focus on doing those things I know help me (walk, prepare my snacks and write every bite) regardless of whether or not I'm motivated.  I'll do it anyway.

What will you do anyway this week?
How'd it go?

Did you let go of your fork last week?

My Journey:
Shawndra's AFTER
I've lost weight twice before but I gained it back eventually.  This time I'm determined to keep it off and I realize that it's not a one time fix.  It's a journey.  And as with all great journeys, you learn as you go.

I take these small steps with you each week because I also need to build and maintain the habits and behaviors that support me in my journey.  Thanks for joining me each week.  Have fun and enjoy your life!
