Small Steps

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Try This:

I had planned weeks ago to make this edition about physical activity in 2010 and the universe has conspired to support that idea.  I just got off a presentation  on the National Physical Activity Plan and it reinforced my own desire and motivation to make physical activity a dedicated priority in my life.

Here's the thing about physical activity: It's not just important for weight maintenance or weight-loss.  It might help you sleep better, think better, move better, feel better (both physically and emotionally) and lower your risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.  You might also increase your chance of living longer (and I'm thinking you'll be happier).  Those are some really good reasons to get and stay physically active.  Now we just need to identify and use those things that actually get us moving.

I had great intentions in 2009, but I let physical activity slip on my priority list.  There was always just one more thing to do before I got up and put on my walking shoes.  Sometimes it was a work related project or the weather, but often times it was one more sip of coffee, not feeling motivated or too tired.  (Hey, if you don't want to do something, one excuse is as good as another, right?)  But when I exercise I feel more energized, more focused and my mind is clearer, so why do I let exercise slip?  It doesn't really matter why.  What's important is what I'm going to do about it in 2010.

I'm going to use the tools that I know keep me going:
  • an event to train for -- the challenge
  • tell everyone I know -- the accountability
  • a training schedule -- the plan
I'm committing, to myself and to you, to walk the Great Aloha Run on February 15.  I've signed up and put my money down.   So that's the challenge and part of the accountability.  Now for the other part.

Would anybody like to train with me or just have a walking partner(s) on Wednesday mornings at 7 am and/or Saturday mornings at 8 am beginning 12/16.  Both days will be at Liliuokulani Park in Hilo.  If you're interested email me shawndra@dhucks.com or call me at 969.3800.  Even if you're not in Hilo but want that weekly motivation and accountability, we might be able to do this virtually through Twitter, Facebook or emails.  Let me know if you're interested.

Those who are interested in committing themselves for the next 9 weeks, rain or shine, holiday excess or not, contact me for details.

And for everyone...

What's your physical activity plan for this week?
How'd it go?

What did you see when you looked back at 2009?

My Journey:
Shawndra's AFTER
I've lost weight twice before but I gained it back eventually.  This time I'm determined to keep it off and I realize that it's not a one time fix.  It's a journey.  And as with all great journeys, you learn as you go.

I take these small steps with you each week because I also need to build and maintain the habits and behaviors that support me in my journey.  Thanks for joining me each week.  Have fun and enjoy your life!
