Small Steps
Letting Go of Perfect
January 2010
Aloha,

My New Year's resolution is to live a more balanced life.  That means work a little, play a little, relax more, enjoy more and do a lot less busywork.  For me, busywork is planning and thinking and organizing ideas on paper.  It also means letting go of the need to get "it" perfect.  A friend shared a great motto with me -- "do it fast, do it wrong". I'd add -- 'do it now.' The idea is to stop talking about it and do something.  Learn as you go, improve as you go, but go.  You don't have to get it perfect.

One of the common causes of chronic disorganization is perfectionism.  Others might find that surprising, but how many times have you put off organizing a room because you didn't have the time to make it perfect?  Or maybe you didn't file your papers because you didn't have the perfect container to use.  Maybe your closet wasn't set up perfectly, so why bother putting away your clothes anyway?  Or maybe you couldn't find the perfect calendar/planner to get a handle on your schedule, so you didn't try anything.

This year, I invite you to let go of your need for perfection and do it fast, do it wrong, but do it now.  Live this year as if it is an experiment to find out what might work for you.
Donate Your Extra Towels

One item that overflows in the average linen closet is towels.  Mainly because we think someday there might be this huge spill and we'll need 20+ towels to clean it up.

Several towels per person plus a few more for guests are sufficient.  So as you buy new towels let go of the same number of old towels and share them with those who need them.

Hawaii Island Humane Society, Keaau Shelter needs towels (and other things of course).

You might also check with your local zoo.
What difference will 15 minutes make?
What's 15 minutes a day worth to you?
Do you have 11 days that you can set aside to organize your home?  You probably think not, but if you spent 15 minutes a day, then by January 1, 2011 you will have spent over 90 hours or 11 eight-hour days organizing.  You can get a lot done in that time.

Which would you rather do?

15 minutes a day or 11 days straight?
Whatever your New Year's resolution (if any), take time to enjoy the journey.
Shawndra Holmberg
Sincerely,

Shawndra
