Small Steps
Look Back and Celebrate
December 2009
Aloha,

For me, December is always a time to look back over the past year and see just how far I've come before jumping into my new year planning. It's too easy for me to focus on what still needs to be done and, in fact, looking at my "intentions and possibilities" for 2009, I have quite a few that will move over to my 2010 list.  But I'm taking the time this month to celebrate my attempts and my successes.

Tips & Tricks started out 2009 with the six stages of organizing and a suggestion to pick an organizing project to work on.  Then in August, the newsletter got a major make-over.  I hope you've enjoyed the new format and service provider because it certainly has made my life easier.

I added Clutter Coaching (organizing help over the phone) to my list of services and held teleclasses on clearing closets and dealing with those paper piles.  I received additional training on chronic disorganization, Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder, hoarding and coaching techniques.  I gained more skills and got some great ideas to help my clients.

I didn't accomplish all the things I had "wanted to do" but I have to live my own advice -- get realistic about the time it takes to do things, take small steps each & every day, make it fun (and it has been fun), focus mainly on the 'next step' (not the whole overwhelming picture), keep track of what has been accomplished and celebrate those successes.

I invite you to take some time to celebrate your starts, attempts, successes, accomplishments and completions.
Take a Picture (Before & After)
Because it's difficult sometimes to remember how the space looked before or to see how much you really have accomplished, I recommend using a digital camera (a phone camera is great for this) to take pictures before, during and after your efforts.

I especially recommend taking photos as you go through a long slow organizing project.  If you have a room or a garage filled with boxes stacked on boxes stacked on boxes and you go through 1-2 boxes a week you may not be able to see all your hard work paying off immediately.  But if you take pictures of each box, bag or basket you've emptied, you will be able to see your progress in photos.

Note:  If your initial response to the example above was that 1-2 boxes a week wasn't fast enough to get the project done, let me ask how long you've been putting off your project?  If it's been a month or more, you could have already cleared out 8 boxes by now if you had been willing to do a little bit at a time.  If it's been a year then you could have cleared over a 100 boxes.  So instead of putting your project off one more week, commit to one box a week or 15 minutes a day.  Take pictures each time and celebrate every small step you take.  It will add up to the life and space you want.
31 Small Steps to Organizing Your Life
I would like to ensure that I'm providing the support you need and want.  Please take 5 minutes to answer my survey and let me know if you would be interested in joining a supportive and non-judgmental group focused on clearing clutter and being more organized in 2010.

A clutter support group will keep you motivated & accountable, teach you the skills and habits to get and stay organized and, best of all, you'll learn that you aren't alone.

To thank you for taking the time to answer this survey I am giving my 31 Small Steps to Organizing Your Life.

This is an electronic pdf file that contains 31 steps that you can take to create a more organized home, office and life so that you can enjoy it.  Some steps will focus on the things in your life; others will  focus on your space, your time or your habits.

Your Price: 5 minutes of your time

However you celebrate your progress this month, take time to enjoy the journey.
Shawndra Holmberg
Sincerely,

Revel in your imperfections,
Be entertained by your problems,
And know that once you looked ahead
And wished you were where you are now.
And once again, you will look back and smile.
