Well I survived hitting bottom last weekend. I love hitting bottom because that means I'm on my way back up. I just realized, yet again, that success isn't about not having those days but rather about coming back after having those days. And of course the more I keep coming back, the easier and quicker it is. So this week I'm focusing on the biggest and most effective tool I've ever used for losing weight. TRACKING. And this works for any other change you want to make.
For me, tracking works because it focuses my attention on my choices. It brings awareness. I make the time to become aware of the food I eat and of the food I'm thinking of eating. Tracking also helps me evaluate whether I'm actually hungry or if I'm eating my emotions.
Tracking can take many forms.
- A program on your computer or the internet;
- A white board on your refrigerator;
- Photos of the food you're thinking of eating (use your phone's camera);
- Magnets on your refrigerator to track your water or your fruits & vegetables; or
- Paper & pen (or pencil).
Paper & pen works best for me because I can touch it, I'm actively involved in writing down the foods I eat and I can see the whole picture on a page. But find what works best for you. Think about what has worked in the past. And don't be afraid to try another way if the first attempt to track isn't as successful as you want.
How will you track this week?
