Structures in Science

Structures in Science 2011As Structures in Science came to an end this summer, the program was once again a huge success. 34 rising 5th and 6th grade female students participated in the eight week program focusing on educating the girls on the role that diet and exercise play in their overall body health while engage participants in growing, harvesting, and preparing their own food. The program also engaged participants in various facets of scientific inquiry in a manner that is fun and interesting to provide participants with knowledge and skills that are foundational to success in middle and high school learning and beyond. Further, the program exposed participants to career paths related to the STEM fields and provided participants with opportunities to present and reflect on their learning.

The girls in the program are planning a harvest festival to reap the fruits of their labor this upcoming Fall.

Senator Gillibrand Roundtable Discussion

Senator Kristen GillibrandOn Friday, September 16th, Heather Filipowicz took part in a roundtable discussion with Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand at Sweet_ness 7 Café on Grant Street. Heather was one of 40 women invited to participate from both the public and private sectors in a discussion on how women can be the key to turning around the economic downturn. The discussion touched on all three focus areas of the Women's Fund.

Senator Gillibrand called for a revival of the "Rosie the Riveter" campaign Friday to galvanize women to become economically empowered during a round-table discussion with local female business owners and entrepreneurs.

The junior senator from New York said she would sponsor a bill for a $6,000 tax credit to reduce the high cost of day care -- a major impediment for women aspiring to own a business or advance in their careers.

How a mix of female empowerment and steamy soap operas helped bring down Brazil's fertility rate and stoke its vibrant economy.

Not including the stillbirth, the three miscarriages, and the baby who lived not quite one full day. Dona Maria Ribeiro de Carvalho, a gravelly-voiced Brazilian lady in her 88th year, completed the accounting of her 16 pregnancies and regarded José Alberto, her oldest son, who had come for a Sunday visit and was smoking a cigarette on her couch. "With the number of children I had," Dona Maria said mildly, her voice conveying only the faintest reproach, "I should have more than a hundred grandchildren right now."
