DECA Recognizes Outstanding School Stores
The School-Based Enterprises (SBE) at 36 Washington high schools achieved certification or re-certification this year and were recognized at DECA's International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida.
School-based Enterprises are effective educational tools in helping to prepare students for the transition from school to work or college. For many students, they provide the first work experience; for others, they provide an opportunity to build management, supervision and leadership skills. DECA's School-based Enterprise (SBE) Certification Program was developed to provide recognition for outstanding achievement by school-based enterprises and to motivate SBEs to strive for excellence and to grow.
School stores can be certified at three levels: Bronze, Silver or Gold. In order to apply for the certification, SBEs must submit extensive documentation showing how they have achieved set standards that are outlined in the Certification Guidelines. After the documentation is submitted, a Review Committee evaluates the documentation to determine which level of certification has been achieved.
Complete information about DECA's School-based Enterprise Certification Program can be found at, www.schoolbasedenterprises.org. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Sissy Long, DECA's School-based Enterprise Project Manager at (205) 223-0204 or sjldeca@aol.com. |

Eco Cars and STEM Recruitment at Granite Falls
On June 2, 2011, two multi-age classes (grades 4-6) from Granite Falls elementary schools went to see the high school's eco-cars as part of Granite Falls High School's STEM recruiting efforts. The elementary students recently received a grant from the local public utility district to build solar cars. The elementary kids got to work on a design for a new car tail section, and the two winners got to ride around the high school in the car. The kids were excited to be working with the high school students, and the high school eco-team members did a great job with them. One girl who won a ride around the school told her teacher, Debra Howell (who just got voted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame), "Mrs. Howell, today was the awesomest day of my life!!!"
Later that day the ShopGirls were invited to make a presentation to the Zonta Club in Everett at their annual banquet. Zonta is an organization devoted to supporting women in business. We took the car to Everett Country Club and brought it right into the restaurant for everyone to see. The club went so far as to collect donations for Granite Falls and to encourage the team to apply for grants from them.
