FIRST Robotics Grant
Two items for everyone involved in FIRST Robotics:
- All districts that received 2010-11 FIRST Robotics grants, Form Package 424, are asked to submit claims at the earliest possible date. Claiming now allows for OSPI to communicate to the Legislature that funds awarded have been actually utilized to improve local school programs.
- OSPI grant options for FIRST Robotics in 2011-12 will not be known until the end of the special session of the Legislature when the Governor signs the final budget. Please be aware that, if funding is provided, there will be a very short turnaround time between the time grant applications are announced and grant applications are due.

Real World Design Challenge Winners Kennewick -- After taking first place in Washington State, a team of students from Kamiakin High School took their design for a next generation airplane wing to the National Real World Design Competition in Washington, D.C. and walked away with a second place finish.
The challenge is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and coordinated in Washington through OSPI. Dennis Milliken, CTE STEM program supervisor, will be presenting the team with a trophy on Thursday, May 4 at 1:30 p.m. in the Kamiakin High School Library.
This is the third year that a team from Kamiakin has won the state challenge and its first placing at nationals. This year's winning team called "Connotations of Flight" was coached by local architect, Terrance Casey. The team from Kamiakin High includes Sangeetha Thevuthasan, Sophomore; Joe Luey Sophomore; Collin Bampton, Senior; Grace Choi, Senior; Amanda White, Senior; and James Luey, Senior.
The team designed a wing for a 737, employing modern structural techniques in the form of spars and ribs for the internal structure. They used steel reinforced titanium for both spars and ribs with a thin layer of aluminum for the skin. Their structure also incorporated a fuel tank designed to hold 20,000 lbs of fuel. They tested over 150 wings in a virtual wind tunnel before reaching their final design.
Each year, the Real World Design Challenge present students with an opportunity to create solutions to a problem faced by one of our Nation's leading industries. For more information, visit http://www.realworlddesignchallenge.org/
If you would like to attend the award ceremony, please contact Lorraine Cooper at 222-7424 or by e-mail at lorraine.cooper@ksd.org. Please feel free to arrive a few minutes early and check in at the front office at Kamiakin. |

Auburn Community Fitness Project
In Auburn, more than 30 percent of Auburn adults are obese, and the area is home to the highest levels of adult obesity in the Seattle-King County area. But Auburn High School students have embarked an effort to change that. The school's campaign, titled Commit to Fit, encourages healthy behaviors and rewards participants for smart choices.
The students who created the program are members of DECA, an organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. With Commit to Fit, the DECA students are achieving dual goals: they're learning how to manage a program while addressing an urgent issue in their community.
