Building Communities Fund (BCF) Program
The Building Communities Fund provides capital facilities grants for community-based, nonresidential community and social service projects. The BCF program was created by the Legislature in 2008 (RCW 43.163A.125) to provide a means of identifying qualified community and social service capital projects, and providing capital support to nonprofit agencies and their partners to develop or improve these facilities.  These investments will play a key role in improving the economic, social, and educational climate in distressed communities and other areas that serve low-income persons.

This program awards state grants to nonprofit, community-based organizations to defray up to 25 percent or more of eligible capital costs to acquire, construct, or rehabilitate nonresidential community and social service centers.  There is no minimum or maximum grant award amount.

The application and guidelines for the Building Communties Fund are now available: 2010 BCF Grant Guidelines.

Workshops for projects that may be funded in the 2011-2013 Capital Budget: June 8, 2010 -- Spokane Community College; June 9, 2010 -- Seattle Center; June 10, 2010 -- Vancouver, WA.

Please RSVP at [email protected]. For more information, contact Capital Program staff at (360) 725-3075.
Limited Allowable Budget Revisions on iGrants
The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) is considering limiting the number of budget revisions that a district and an educational service district (ESD) may make per iGrant form package per year, to three.  The three budget revision limit includes two regular budget revisions and one budget revision to incorporate carry-over.  The purpose of limiting to three revisions is both to underscore the importance of planning and to ensure that OSPI staff can serve districts and ESDs in a timely and efficient manner.  At present, we are approving over 4,000 budgets a year-not including the budget revisions.  To be sure, if there were extenuating circumstances, the individual grant program office would work with a district or an ESD to allow a needed revision.

Before a final decision is made, we would like feedback from you about this topic.  Please submit your comments via email, by June 11, 2010, to Jami Peterson, Executive Assistant for Special Programs & Federal Accountability at [email protected].  Thank you in advance for your consideration and feedback.

STEMester of Service Grants
Funded by Learn and Serve America, a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, STEMester of Service incorporates Youth Service America's (YSA) semester-long service-learning framework to engage educators and students in addressing critical environmental needs and connecting them to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) curricula, specifically science and technology.

YSA is seeking 10 middle schools with large populations of disadvantaged youth to join 20 returning STEMester of Service grantees. STEM schools must be located in one of the 12 states with highest dropout rates (Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, and Washington).

The $5,000 grant (that includes travel and training at YSA's Youth Service Institute in Detroit in October) supports teachers as they engage local partners and guide students in addressing local needs through planning and implementing sustainable service projects that launch on Martin Luther King, Jr Day of Service (January 17, 2011) and culminate on Global Youth Service Day (April 15-17, 2011).
