Unaffordable Dental Care is Linked to Frequent School Absences
A recent study indicates that unaffordable dental care is linked to missed school among California's school children. An estimated 7% of children missed one or more school days due to a dental problem in the past year. Children from familes that cannot afford dental care missed more school days than children from families
that can afford needed dental care.

First 5 El Dorado Evaluation Report

First 5 El Dorado uses several sources for assessing program effectiveness and overall impact of investments. In a report soon to be released,  results of First 5 El Dorado County investments in 2008-09 are available to the community. The report includes information from over 1,000 parent surveys, Pre-Kindergarten Observation forms, and other data sources.Parent Survey - Oral Health
A Regional Focus
First 5 El Dorado worked with SEI to define zip code boundaries for each of the three regions. This allows us to view information from parent surveys for Georgetown Divide, Western Slope, and South Lake Tahoe. The report includes a section for each region.
Understanding Oral Health Use and Access in El Dorado County

Based on information from parent surveys, in FY 2008-09 64% of children between the ages of 1 and 5 saw a dentist or other oral health practitioner within the previous 12 months. Of children that had received dental care in the past year, 83% had dental insurance. Of 255 parents that reported that their child had never seen a dentist or had not received dental care in more than 2 years, nearly two-thirds (65%) had dental insurance, indicating that  insurance isn't the only factor related to oral health care access for young children in El Dorado County. Using interviews and online surveys, First 5 El Dorado and SEI will learn from parents and families about what the pathways and barriers to routine oral health care are for children in our community.
