Griffin Poetry Prize shortlist, more nominations for Annabel, and Poetry Month

Spring is finally here! (We're pretty sure -- if it snows again it's not our fault.) Welcome to April and National Poetry Month, the time of year when we celebrate the beauty of the written word. To help you get in the mood, we're offering 30% off all poetry books on our website from now until April 30 (limited and special editions excluded). So go on and indulge in some poetry! Makes a much better Easter gift than a basket of coloured eggs, too.

We're very excited to share that:

Suzanne Buffam's The Irrationalist has been shortlisted for the Griffin Poetry Prize! This prestigious prize (awarded last year to Karen Solie's Pigeon) is one of the richest poetry prizes in the world, valued at $65,000. The winner will be announced on June 1st.

Steven Heighton's poem "Jetlag," from his collection Patient Frame, has won the P.K. Page Founders' Award for Poetry.

Kathleen Winter's Annabel has been longlisted for one of the most respected literary prizes in the world, the Orange Prize for Fiction, and is a finalist for the Thomas Head Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award.

APRIL NEW RELEASES
A debut short story collection you won't want to miss, poetry poetry poetry, crime fiction gone portable, and three fantastic Granta books

Up Up Up

UP UP UP

by Julie Booker

A radiant debut collection from Canada's freshest new voice in fiction.

Up Up Up heralds the arrival of a writer of astonishing range, compassion and acuity. In this taut collection of twenty short, sharp stories Julie Booker grabs the reins from writers like Lydia Millet and Miranda July and takes off at full speed, and in directions all her own.

Advance reviews of Up Up Up:

"Up Up Up is a stunning, fresh debut collection from an author who is worth watching." -- Walrus Magazine

"Up Up Up doesn't read like a debut: this is a writer who has clearly been honing her craft for quite some time." -- Quill & Quire

"With Up Up Up, Julie Booker has served up a first book that's hilarious and heartbreaking, merry and sombre. It's an irresistible mix." -- Rover Arts

Methodist Hatchet

METHODIST HATCHET

by Ken Babstock

The eagerly anticipated fourth collection from one of Canada's finest poets, acclaimed by Time magazine as "one of the best things to happen to poetry in Canada."

Here is the exhilarating new collection from one of our most important and talented poets, a finalist for the 2007 Griffin Poetry Prize and the 2006 Governor General's Literary Award and winner of the Trillium Book Award for Poetry.

Fearless in its language, its trajectories and frames of reference, Methodist Hatchet gazes upon the objects of its attention until they rattle and exude their auras of strangeness. It is this strangeness, this mysterious stillness, that is the big heart of Ken Babstock's playful, fierce, intelligent book.

Advance reviews of Methodist Hatchet:

". . . just call [Ken Babstock] what he is: the best Canadian poet of his generation."
-- Walrus Magazine

A Doctor Pedalled

A DOCTOR PEDALLED HER BICYCLE OVER THE RIVER ARNO

by Matt Rader

"Rader has quickly gone from being a poet to watch to one of the poets to watch." -- Zachariah Wells, ARC

A Doctor Pedalled Her Bicycle Over the River Arno carries within it all the technique, vision, imaginative labour, and razor-sharp precision of Matt Rader's first two collections but ascends, also, to a new and luminous, demanding, particularized realm of the human. This is an astounding collection from a thrilling voice in poetry.

Oyama Pink ShaleOYAMA PINK SHALE

by Sharon Thesen

The latest collection from Governor General's Literary Award finalist and celebrated poet Sharon Thesen.

Governor General's Literary Award finalist Sharon Thesen's latest poetry collection, Oyama Pink Shale, is a sly, self-directed, yet joyously emancipatory work. By animating and voicing various moments and selves -- indebted adult friend to artists, cold documentarian of a haunted sanitarium, engaged contemporary ticking off beauties, among others -- Thesen's poems show the transience of the earthly moment while convincing us of the thread of spirit that links all our lost bits and makes them possible.
