MARCH NEW RELEASES
A first novel from a major new literary talent, an anthology edited by Anne Enright, and two moving books from Linda Grant PIGEON ENGLISH by Stephen Kelman"Pigeon English is a triumph." -- Emma Donoghue, author of Room Newly arrived from Ghana with his mother and older sister, eleven-year-old Harrison Opoku lives on the ninth floor of a block of flats on a London housing estate. The second best runner in his grade, Harri races through his new life in his personalized trainers -- the Adidas stripes drawn on with marker -- blissfully unaware of the very real threat all around him. With equal fascination for the local gang -- the Dell Farm Crew -- and the pigeon who visits his balcony, Harri absorbs the many strange elements of his new life in England: watching, listening, and learning the tricks of inner-city survival. But when a boy is knifed to death on the high street and a police appeal for witnesses draws only silence, Harri decides to start a murder investigation of his own. In doing so, he unwittingly endangers the fragile web his mother has spun around her family to try and keep them safe. A story of innocence and experience, hope and harsh reality, Pigeon English is a spellbinding portrayal of a boy balancing on the edge of manhood and of the forces around him that try to shape the way he falls. Pigeon English will be published around the world, with film rights sold to Ridley and Tony Scott's Scott Free UK. The story will be adapted for the screen by Jack Thorne, directed by Adam Smith, and produced by Liza Marshall. We can't wait to find out who will play Harri!Advance reviews of Pigeon English:"Told with humour, despite the gritty subject matter and setting . . . Pigeon English charms its way into some hard places." -- Financial Times>> Enter to win a copy of Pigeon English in our March contest! THE GRANTA BOOK OF THE IRISH SHORT STORY edited by Anne EnrightMan Booker Prize-winning author Anne Enright's selection of the best Irish short stories of the last sixty years.Nostalgic, dark, comic, iconoclastic, the Irish short story has always punched well above its weight. Anne Enright has brought together a dazzling collection of Irish stories written in the last sixty years, by authors from Elizabeth Bowen and Frank O'Connor to Claire Keegan and Kevin Barry. With a pithy and passionate introduction by Enright, The Granta Book of the Irish Short Story traces this great tradition through decades of social change, and shows the ease and pleasure Irish writers continue to take in the short story form. There is no truth so telling as a small truth, or so much fun. WHEN I LIVED IN MODERN TIMES by Linda GrantA stylish reissue of the Orange Prize-winning novel. It is April 1946. Evelyn Sert, twenty years old, a hairdresser from Soho, sails for Palestine, where Jewish refugees and idealists are gathering from across Europe to start a new life in a brand-new country. In the glittering, cosmopolitan, Bauhaus city of Tel Aviv, anything seems possible -- the new self, new Jew, new woman are all feasible. Evelyn, adept at disguises, reinvents herself as the bleached-blonde Priscilla Jones. Immersed in a world of passionate idealism, she finds love, and with Johnny, her lover, finds herself at the heart of a very dangerous game. * REMIND ME WHO I AM, AGAIN by Linda Grant"A skillful, moving, even humorous book. It is more than an elegy for a lost mother or the charting of one human being's decline . . . It is an investigation of memory." -- Scotland on Sunday At the beginning of the 1990s, Linda Grant's mother, Rose, was diagnosed with Dementia. In Remind Me Who I Am, Again Linda Grant tells the story of Rose's illness and tries to reconstruct the history of their Jewish immigrant family, stalking them from Russia and Poland to New York and London. Writing with humour and great tenderness, Grant explores profound questions about memory, autonomy, and identity, and asks if we can ever really know our parents.

FEATURED AUTHOR INTERVIEW
When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
I first realized I wanted to be a writer at a very young age, probably six or seven years old. I remember being a very keen reader at that age, and it's something that, as far back as I know, I've always wanted to do. I just feel very lucky now that I have the chance to fulfill a lifelong dream.
What was the inspiration for Pigeon English?
I think a large part of the inspiration for Pigeon English was the recent press that U.K. children, especially those that live in deprived areas, have gotten. There's a lot of noise about knife crime and violence among the nation's children at the moment and, having grown up myself in a housing estate which is much like the one that features in the book, I wanted to show the positive aspects of these children's lives and tell their stories in a way that I think hadn't necessarily been told before.

| AN ANANSI READER
Meet Bridget Haines!
Twitter: @bmhaines
Bridget, you are a former Anansi/Groundwood intern. What are you up to now?
Currently I am completing my second year of a three-year advanced diploma in public relations at Humber College. I also spend time volunteering with the student steering committee of the Canadian Public Relations Society, as a member of their logistic team. And with summer approaching fast, I have been seeking out new volunteer and internship opportunities.
What was your favourite part of the intern experience?
I loved everything about it; the Anansi/Groundwood office is filled with amazing people who are extremely kind and helpful. My opinion and input were truly valued, and I always felt involved.
Being able to sit in on marketing and PR meetings also gave me a great idea of what to expect when I enter the workforce, and I was honoured when given the responsibility to write a few press releases that were used for some of the spring/summer 2010 titles.

Latest reviews for The Water Rat of Wanchai:
"Ava is unbeatable at just about everything. Just wait for her to roll out her bak mei against the bad guys. She's perfect. She's fast." -- Toronto Star
"If the other novels are half as good as this debut by Ian Hamilton, then readers are going to celebrate. [. . .] This is a terrific story that's certain to be on the Arthur Ellis Best First Novel list this year. Even better news is that the next three novels in the series are already written and ready to print." -- Globe and Mail
"In the age of Lisbeth Salander, it's not hard to see why Hamilton's jet-setting heroine is so appealing." -- National Post
