Ask The Expert!
 | | The Goddard School Buckhead |
Picking the right preschool can be so stressful. There are so many factors that have to be considered including the setting, staff, location, student/teacher ratios, price and so much more. We took some of our most pressing questions to
Kellen Stennett, the owner of The Goddard School's Buckhead location to find out what parents should look for when picking a pre-school. Although located in the heart of Buckhead's business district, upon entering The Goddard School in Buckhead, you'll see that it has the feel of a neighborhood school, which is an important factor in making your choice.
Q: Why is preschool important for children to attend?
A: Nowadays, preschools can be legitimate "schools" that are a far stretch from the "daycare" concept of our past. A strong preschool program can be a big influence on a child's social and educational futures. Preschools that implement a solid curriculum, while also emphasizing social and emotional growth, definitely give students the best start possible. As we parents know, children thrive on social interaction and benefit a great deal from the time spent in a school setting, which is lengthier and more structured than play groups and Mother's Morning Out programs. Obviously, as parents, we all care about safety and security, and preschools offer a system of checks and balances that just doesn't exist with other options.
Q: What should parents look for when picking the right preschool?
A: Choosing a preschool can be a mountain of a task. The best advice that I can give parents is to do lots of research. The biggest thing to look for, though, is a team (both the administration and staff) that truly cares about you and your child. There are the obvious points you should touch on: Curriculum, Teacher Qualifications, Cleanliness/Health Policies, Safety/Security, Open-Door Policy, etc. Then there are the ones we don't think of until we have a problem. Ask about staff turnover, frequency of illness, and accreditations. Find out who you'll be speaking to when problems arise. Ultimately, choosing a school is about feeling comfortable leaving your child in the school's hands, in terms of both safety and education. Usually, parents 'just know' it's a fit!
Q: What sets the The Goddard School Buckhead apart from other area pre-schools?
A: Our school is different for many reasons, but the biggest is certainly on-site ownership. We have a nationally-accredited (CITA/SACS-CACI) curriculum taught by true teachers with Bachelor's and/or Master's degrees, 25 years of proven results, and an around-the-clock Quality Assurance department, but the thing that really stands out is access to, and presence of, ownership. I'm always available to parents for questions, concerns, etc. The quality difference in an environment where the owner (the one person who undoubtedly cares the most about the school's success) is there all day, every day, is palpable. As the smallest Goddard School in the country, at our Buckhead location we're able to offer an even more personalized experience, for both students and their parents. A successful national brand with extremely high standards combined with the size and feel of a small private school community makes us different than any other school out there.
Q: What are your student teacher ratios and why is that so important?
A: Our ratios change from classroom-to-classroom. Since we place students based on development, as opposed to age, it can sometimes be confusing to explain. Basically, infants (up to about age 1) will have a 1:4 ratio, young toddlers that are walking (about ages 1 - 2) are at a 1:5 ratio, older toddlers (2 - 3) are at a 1:6 ratio, and preschool and Pre-K (3 - 5) are at a 1:10 ratio. Keeping the ratios low and the overall class sizes small allows our teachers to spend much more time working one-on-one with the children. The individualized approach we emphasize is best accomplished with these ratios.
Q: How involved is The Goddard School Buckhead in the local community?
A: We take a lot of pride in our community, here. We regularly participate in, and donate to, local events. This past year we sponsored and/or volunteered at the Garden Hills Ice Cream Social, the Brookhaven Bolt (benefiting Ashford Park Elementary), the Chastain Park Arts Festival, and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, to name a few! We also teamed up with one of our amazing parents here to raise a collection of shoes and school supplies for young children in his birthplace of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Q: What programs do you offer for school aged kids?
A: The school-aged programs we offer include both Summer Camp and After-School care. Though we are a year-round school, we do accept Summer students between the last week of May and the first week of August.
