Now that the holidays have come and gone, many of us are finally starting to crack down on our New Years' resolutions - many of which relate to kicking some of our undesirable eating habits to the curb and making strides toward a better, healthier (and maybe leaner!) 2012.

 

Here are some tips to get you started on the right track...

 

1. Get back to basics with a healthy breakfast

Breakfast is the first opportunity to refuel and kick start your metabolism each day. By starting the day with a proper meal, you will set yourself up to have more control over your eating throughout the day. Just keep in mind, the type of "fuel" you choose, does make a difference. A Dunkin' Donut and a cup of coffee just won't cut it!

 

The following options are much better choices...they all combine lean protein with whole grain carbohydrate, which together provide a satisfying, healthy meal that stays with you longer. These are good choices for your kids too!

  • High-fiber cereal (like Kashi Go lean or Total) with fat-free or low fat milk and fresh fruit. Look for the words "whole grain" or "whole wheat" as the first ingredient on cereal boxes.
  • Peanut butter and sliced banana on a whole wheat waffle or English muffin.
  • Hard-boiled or scrambled eggs (or egg whites) with a "mini" whole wheat bagel.
  • Low-fat yogurt and a whole grain granola bar (such as Nature Valley) and fresh fruit.

2. Plan Ahead!

Like so many other aspects of healthy eating, whether your goal is to lose weight, fuel your body for a marathon, or put a healthy meal on the table for your family, it all comes down to one word. PLANNING!   Knowing what to eat is certainly part of this, but having the right food on hand and planning ahead is the only way to true success. Make a grocery list at the beginning of the week and stock up on healthy snacks to keep on hand for those times when hunger strikes.

 

3. When grocery shopping, stick to the perimeter of the grocery store.

Did you ever notice that most of the processed junk foods are found in the middle aisles? By steering clear of these aisles, you will be less tempted to put unhealthy choices in your shopping cart. Try choosing mostly food s that have been exposed to as little processing as possible. Food that is found in our natural environment is a whole lot better for you - and you will FEEL better when you eat these.

 

4. Be reasonable!

It's not necessary to eat perfectly healthy all the time. Establishing healthy eating habits is more of a lifestyle, and there needs to be some ebb and flow. Restrictive diet plans never work in the long run. Allow for some leeway to have occasional indulgences, but try to then make healthy choices to compensate. Instead of feeling guilty about those not-so-good eating days, resolve to get back on track and move forward, focusing on the positive steps you've made rather than allowing yourself to feel set back.

Our certified coaches and counselors provide a terrific learning environment at each of our venues.

  • Kids Club Camp, ages 3-5, 9am-1pm, *Stay & Play available from 1-3pm for an additional cost.
  • Sports Camp, ages 6-12, 9am-3pm

Sports and fun, rolled into one!  Let the kids enjoy a day of fun and activities on their holiday from school.  We will play a variety of sports and recreational games.  Cost is $45 per child for members and $50 per child for non-members.

The Pilates Powerhouse, located in historic Roswell, off Canton street, is the only studio in Roswell and Alpharetta that teaches Classical Pilates as taught by Master Teacher Romana Kryzanowska, who was trained by and taught alongside Joseph H. Pilates. Emily Bradley was hand picked by Romana to become a Level 4 Instructor and has been teaching Pilates for more than a decade. The Pilates Powerhouse uses both major elements of the Pilates method -- "mat work" exercises and those movements performed on equipment.  Pilates is an exercise system developed by Joseph Pilates focusing on improving flexibility and strength for the entire body without building bulk.   

 

What are the Benefits of Pilates?

  • Pilates is done by individuals of all ages.
  • Pilates has been endorsed by professional dancers, artists, and athletes to improve overall conditioning and prevent injury.
  • Pilates can also be used safely by pregnant women to learn proper breathing and recover body shape during and after pregnancy.
  • Pilates increases circulation and helps to sculpt the body and strengthen the body's "powerhouse" (the area between the the bottom of your ribcage and the line across your hips).
  • People who do pilates regularly feel they have better posture, are less prone to injury, and experience better overall health.

After your very first session, you will notice a sense of elongation and the feeling of standing up straighter. You will also feel the center or "core" of your body being used to initiate movement. If you continue on a regular program of at least twice a week you will notice the changes to your body after each session. You will feel more flexible and begin to feel firmer in your abdomen and buttocks and your posture will be more upright. As Joseph Pilates has said, after 10 sessions you will feel better, after 20 sessions you will look better and after 30 sessions you will have a new body!
