It is my great pleasure to announce that Dr. Emil Tanagho has been unanimously voted by the EAS Selection Committee to be the recipient of this year's EAS Outstanding Achievement Award.
A long time resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, Dr. Tanagho served as Chairman of the UCSF Department of Urology from 1976 to 1996. Under his direction, the department became known for its pioneering work in the field of neurostimulation for control of micturition (urinary incontinence). In 1985, his work was recognized with the Jacob Javits Neurosciences Award, and was so honored for ten consecutive years. His group won the Jack Lapides Prize for Neurourology and Urodynamics eight of the eleven times it was given during his tenure. He has developed electrodes for stimulation of the sacral roots and has broad and lengthy experience with a large series of patients in whom these have been implanted. The author of hundreds of scientific articles, Dr. Tanagho also serves on the editorial boards of numerous journals, including The Journal of Urology, Neurourology and Urodynamics.
Dr. Tanagho's pioneering work has improved the livelihood and saved the lives of thousands of patients, especially the needy. He slips out of San Francisco regularly to tackle the most complicated clinical cases in Egyptian Hospitals, where for years he has performed hundreds of operations pro bono, much to the gratitude of patients, their families, faculty and staff who acknowledge him, as do many, as a "Legend of Urology".
"I am Honored and Humbled. Deeply appreciative for everyone. Please convey my thanks to all." were Dr. Tanagho's words when he was informed of the result of the selection process.
Dr. Tanagho is our guest of honor at our upcoming Christmas Party on January 9th. Join us to celebrate the Outstanding Achievements of this extraordinary Egyptian.
The EAS team would like to thank the members of the Selection Committee: Mrs. Amany Ghanem, Mr. Nabil Gobrial, Mr. Youssri Helmy and Mr. Sameh Michaiel for promptly and professionally handling the selection process.
Our sincere thanks also to five EAS members who got involved and sent us four different nominations for the award. We hope to continue this tradition in the coming years and urge you all to follow their lead and make your voice heard when necessary.
