New Public Art in San Mateo
On Oct 1, City Arts of San Mateo hosted a reception to celebrate the installation of the sculpture "The Juggler" by Watsonville artist, Aaron Van de Kerckhove, at MidPen Housing's Peninsula Station development at 2901 El Camino Real in San Mateo. The sculpture is made from ¾-inch cor-ten steel and stainless steel. It stands 12 feet high.
"The Juggler" is the first work of public art installed as part of the City of San Mateo's Art in Public Places Ordinance, which was passed in 2006. Peninsula Station is the result of a partnership between the City of San Mateo, County of San Mateo and MidPen Housing. Pen Station, as it is called, provides transit-oriented housing to 68 low income families.
Nature and the human figure influence Van de Kerckhove's sculptural pieces.
His work is installed in numerous public spaces in the Bay Area, Santa Cruz
and beyond and is held in many private collections across the United States. See Aaron's work or see more public art in San Mateo.
