"I create clay monotypes, multi-layered and complex: a lot like life."  "Layers fascinate me: new paint over old walls, once shiny artifacts showing the patina of the time. What is on the surface, and what is hidMartha Castillo artworkden? With various media I build layers of texture and color. I attempt to convey a sense of history, creating subtle  surprises and places to travel within each piece. Intuition and experience guide my work."

Martha Castillo will be exhibiting her Clayprints at Peninsula Volunteers Little House Art Gallery, 800 Middle Avenue, Menlo Park, from July 18th through August 31st.

Peninsula Artist Helps "Green" the Tenderloin National Forest  Bloom
RWC Linden Street Warehouse Artist, Laura Diamondstone, has been taking her painting and drawing off the canvas. Her most recent project was transforming a section of turf in the Tenderloin National Forest. The turf required watering and mowing and was not being used as intended. She and Darryl Smith, co-founder of the Luggage Store Gallery in San Francisco, composted the turf, selected stones and rocks, and obtained donated cactus and succulents. The design was 'process-oriented', much like Laura's painting process which  includes found objects and incorporates site specific bloom 2
materials including self-mixed earth pigments.

San Mateo County Fair's "Carry the Light III"  Carry the Light III

Three years running the "Carry the Light" program at the county fair's Fine Arts Galleria, Boris Koodrin says that, "One thing stands out about this economic downturn--fine art is one luxury item that is doing just fine. In fact, it seems to be doing cartwheels at a time when others are doing whatever they can to barely hang on."

The fair ran June 11-19 and attendance was up by 30%. Coordinators Boris Koodrin and Kayte Van De Mark reported a doubling in art sales and Literary Coordinator Bardi Rosman Koodrin reported standing room only for several events including the second Author Book Signing Day.

New this year was the "Day of the Dead" division in painting and Boris says, " It looks like it will be a huge hit in the future." Various management positions are available for creative-minded volunteers and early registration is encouraged for those who wish to put their personal stamp on this show for next year.
