Call For Artists! The Best of Video Game Art and Animated Film Art Award Sponsored by Peninsula Arts Council at the Peninsula Festival June 12-20, 2010
Amateur and professional video game artists or movie production artists are invited to submit their final stills or graphic renderings in the form of two-dimensional framed and wired artwork, no larger than 18" x 24" and apply for the "Best of Video Game Art and Animated Film Art Award" on the General Entry Form. Submit the form with entry fees by the deadline of May 15, 2010. Peninsula Festival Entry Catalogs are available at PAC or online. You're Invited! Celebrate Silicon Valley Open Studios 24th Year!
Hundreds of Artists, Thousands of Stories, Unlimited Imagination...Over the first three weekends in May emerging and established artists throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara counties will open their studios to show and sell their work. SVOS is free to the public and runs from 11am until 5pm all three weekends. Discover the tremendous diversity and wealth of talent in Silicon Valley. Visiting open studios gives you time to see an artist's body of work and discuss his/her creative process and inspirations. It is arguably one of the best ways to understand their philosophy and motivation as well as find pieces that speak to you.

Silicon Valley Open Studios San Mateo County Artists Here are just three of the 90 fantastic artists exhibiting in San Mateo County.
Rob Browne(Site 12, Weekend 2) specializes in portraits in addition to whimsical wall and pedestal creations made with materials ranging from plaster to bronze. He will be in the studio 11am - 5pm on May 8 and 9. Address: 1870 Art Center 1870 Ralston Avenue, Belmont, CA 94002. Rochelle Carr (Site 459, Weekend 2) strives to share beauty, art and elegance from the world surrounding her. The playful style she uses blends the tactile depth of sculpture (using paint or wall plaster) with the rich tones of acrylics, oils and 23-karat gold leaf. She will be in her studio 11am - 5pm on May 8 and 9. Address: Rochelle Carr Studio and Gallery, 560 Isla nd Place, Redwood City, CA 94065. Fred Holle (Site 12, Weekend 2) is a figurative "Expressionist" artist. As a painter and printmaker he knows that drawing is the genesis of all his work, so constantly draws from models. A Gallup study of 26 U.S.
communities has found that the worst economic crisis in decades is not a key
factor in attracting and retaining residents. In fact, a community's social
offerings (fun places to gather), its physical beauty and its openness to new
and different people are most important to making residents love where they
live, the study found. The Soul of the Community survey was designed to explore
this connection between economic growth and residents' emotional attachment to
their community. The latest results, from year two of the three-year study,
suggest a significant correlation between the two. Read more |
The Arts Ask for More! Peninsula Arts Council has joined Americans for the Arts as an Official Partner in "The Arts Ask For More!" National Arts Education Public Awareness Campaign. This public service advertising (PSA) campaign is designed to educate parents on why the arts are essential to a child's development and empower them to get more art into kids' lives, in and out of school.

"Experience the Possibilities for People with Autism"
In celebration of Autism Awareness Month, Jigsaw Java, a puzzle studio and store in downtown Redwood City, is hosting "Experience the Possibilities for People with Autism" a Benefit and Puzzle Art Auction for the local chapter of Autism Society of America. The event will be held at Angelica's Bistro, 863 Main Street, Redwood City on Friday, April 23, 7:00 - 9:00 pm. The unique puzzle art being auctioned was created by youth with autism in 30-minute individualized sessions with Lisette Lugo, an artist and certified Mneme Therapist

City Arts of San Mateo Awards
This year City Arts of San Mateo is celebrating its tenth annual High School Arts Recognition Program. Participating students and teachers will be honored at a reception beginning at 2 p.m. April 25 in the Oak Room at San Mateo Public Library, 55 W. Third Ave., San Mateo. The program was open to students of Aragon, Hillsdale and San Mateo High School. Two $500 Grand Prize awards, one for Visual Arts and one for Literary Arts, will be presented in an awards ceremony, which will begin at 2:30 p.m. Also, First Place prizes of $200 will be awarded in five categories (2-Dimensional Visual Arts, 3-Dimensional Visual Arts, Photography, Poetry and Prose) to winning student entrants. Other special awards are Honorable Mention certificates. The program is presented by nonprofit City Arts of San Mateo to inspire, encourage, and acknowledge the creativity and talent of our high school students. Winners of the Grand Prize awards for best development of the 2010 theme "Look Beyond" are Betty Shen, a student at San Mateo High School, for visual arts and Alice Bebbington, a student at Aragon High School, for literary arts.
