Rima Abedi Sagherian Dedication Evening

Monday, July 23, 2012 was an evening of remembrance, tribute and celebration at Ararat Chapter where many came together to pay homage and witness the dedication of Center's Blue Gym in honor of our beloved friend Rima Abedi Sagherian. The solemn occasion was collaborated with Rima's husband David Sagherian who generously offered to support the Chapter in celebration and commemoration of Rima's colorful life.

The attendees were invited to the special unveiling of a memorial pane by her son Christopher near the Scouting Division quarters. The display is a lovely collection of Rima's original Scout uniform, memorabilia and pictures of her journey through the scouting ranks. This was followed by a presentation of Rima's decades of admirable athletic and scouting accomplishments culminating with her contribution to the Eagle Scout program at Ararat Chapter.

Then everyone was gathered at the Blue Gym where Mrs. Margaret Abedi unveiled the wall and the gymnasium was officially dedicated in honor of Rima Abedi Sagherian. This emotional undertaking was later followed by a reception at the Center's foyer where "Rima Abedi Sagherian Memorial Scholarship" announcement was made. With contributions from Abedi and Sagherian families, and particularly her husband David; the Ararat Chapter Annual Scholarships will further be augmented to serve more of our college bound members in pursuit of their academic goals.

The reception concluded with passionate remarks by David Sagherian, appreciation notes from Ararat Chapter Executive Committee Chair Helik Issagholian, Glendale Councilmember Raffi Manoukian and MC Arick Gevorkian who assured the Abedi and Sagherian families with the following quote: "Rima lives with us; we live with Rima and her legacy, kind deeds, contagious smile and dedication to community is etched forever in our minds, hearts and souls".

Ararat Rhythmics after 10 Years

The first thing skeptics ask when they hear of rhythmic gymnastics..."is that the one where the girls run around and twirl a ribbon?" Rhythmic gymnastics is indeed a competitive sport, and it recognized highly enough world-wide to have been part of the Olympic Games since 1984. The sport entails discipline, hard work, dedication, and high-level competitions all year long, nationally and internationally.

In September of 2002, the General Athletics Division added another discipline to the sports practiced at Ararat. With the help of Coach Ovsanna Mkhchian, the program launched its first group class on September 4, 2002. Since then, we have had a great team of young athletes show interest in the sport of rhythmic gymnastics. These devoted girls, and now teens, train to this day, for several days a week in 5 sanctioned disciplines - ball, hoop, rope, ribbon, and clubs.

Preparing for competitions, and showing up at the meets, and actually performing their best, takes effort from several angels. The girls themselves need to put time and hard work; they must be both physically and mentally prepared for upcoming competitions. Coach, Ovsanna Mkhchian, and Assistant Coach Armina Petsoyan, also, show their dedication through how they train these athletes, challenge them, and encourage them to continue pushing forward. And, our team parents play a great role in the bigger picture. They are the driving force at home with the girls, as well as the support system for our coaches, while the team is training for competitions.

Ararat Rhythmics team has participated in many competitive events since 2002. In the most recent competitive season, December 2011 to May 2012, our team competed in local competitions, the Southern California State meet, as well as, the Region 1 Championships. Our gymnasts in Levels 3, 5 and 6 ranked 1st through 8th in their respective age division and for each apparatus. The girls are now preparing for the next season which begins in January 2013, with the first anticipated competition in San Diego. Until then, to mark the program's 10 year Anniversary, as Ararat Rhythmics, an Anniversary Show is being planned, before the end of 2012. We'll keep you posted on the date.

News From Scouts

From August 5 to 11 the Scouting Division attended the 6th Regional Camp. Every four years, instead of the Annual Camp our scouts attend a camp planned on the regional level. This camp brought together scouts from twelve other chapters with about 470 participants.
Ararat was represented with 195 scouts. The camp was held at Homenetmen's Camp Tecuya.

Camp was the full week for Ari and Arenoush scouts and four days for the Guyliks and Artsviks. Throughout the week the scouts sat through many lessons and activities that fulfilled merit badge requirements so they can come back and complete the work. The camp games were also modeled after the Olympics where each team represen ted a different country.

A great highlight from camp was that Ararat scouts won both awards for tent inspection, Ari/Arenoush and Guylik/Artsvik. We are very proud that our scouts showed their strength and scouting spirit.

Other activities at camp include the climbing wall, archery range, campfires, and swimming. The scouts made many new friends they will continue to see outside of scouting and at future scouting events. Camp is about learning and growing with your friends and the memories undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Corporate Matching Fund
A Smart Way to Give!

Many companies such as Bank
of America, Boeing, Walt Disney and AIG offer generous programs to encourage employees to contribute to the non-profit organizations. These companies provide 'Corporate Matching' where they match or double the donations of an employee or provide 'Employee Volunteer Programs' where they make donations against the volunteer service hours an employee gives to a non-profit.

Ask your HR if they offer these programs. Fill out the necessary forms and let them know you support us!

By requesting your employer to support Ararat, you can significantly increase the size of your contribution, allowing our organization to have more funds to produce the programs you and your family enjoy.
