Scouts' Marching Competition

On September 28th, the Scouting Division held its annual Marching Competition. Year round, the scouts practice marching with their groups and at this day, they have the opportunity to show off their hard work at the competition.

Three of our former scouts, Melina Aghazarian, Lernik Ohanian, and Raffi Sarian were invited to conduct the judging for the contest.

The Marching Competition is an important event for scouts because it highlights individual discipline and group togetherness, both very important aspects of scouting.

Arenoush 4 won the first place title for 2010.

Relay for Life

Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event that empowers everyone to help fight cancer by raising money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society's lifesaving mission. On October 2, Ararat's team along with many others gathered at Scholl Canyon and took turn walking or running around the field. Relay For Life symbolizes the hope that people lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face the disease have support, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

As in previous years our team members wholeheartedly worked toward raising funds for this worthy cause and demonstrated great determination by their efforts. With 12 members, Team Ararat achieved its fundraising goal and raised over $1400 for American Cancer Society.

We thank all who joined us for a wonderful experience and hope to see many more members next year, again.

 Rally 2010

On October 9, 29 teams of drivers and navigators set out to show their skills by travelling over 260 mile route from Ararat Center to Las Vegas, Nevada. Fortunately for us they all made it to the finish line. Though this was a highly competitive race there were many new leaders in the top 12 teams. We congratulate all the participants.

The Rally was fun for everyone, participa nts as well as time keepers. All participants had a great time regardless of their eventual ranks. We recognize and highly appreciation the magnificant job that our Rally master Andre and his wife Desi Guilanians have done and congratulate them for another successful Rally.

 Scouts' Oath and Transfer Ceremony
Open House

On October 10, the Scouting Division held its "Open House" and "Transfer and Oath Ceremony." The Open House was an opportunity for members of the community, parents, and non-scouts to visit us and see what scouting is all about and get to know the scouts better, especially the leaders. Each troop prepared their own booth and there were activities and food to pass the time in between visiting the booths.

The events lined up earlier in the day were a hit but it was the closing ceremony that brought everything together and captured the spirit of scouting. The ceremony began with transfers and oaths. Transferring and the oath are turning points for a scout since they indicate the individual growth that will follow and represent the meaning and promise of being a scout. Guylik and Artsvik scouts (cubs and brownies) transfer into either the next, older, Guylik and Artsvik troop, or into an Ari and Arenoush troop. At the ceremony, the scouts transferred and took their respective oaths with their fellow brothers and sisters, and joined their new lines.

Eighteen of our scouts received the Azagyen Shkanashan from the Homenetmen Regional Scouting Committee, the culmination to  a lengthy learning process that they started this summer at our Annual Camp. Further, after a full year of work, six of our leaders received their Vkayal Kark. Vkayal is the second highest Homentmen test overall and the highest test currently offered to our scouts.

This was an important day on many levels and was moving because over 300 guests and scouts came together, both to attend and help with the event.

 Quiz Bowl

It was just another Sunday afternoon on October 17 at Ararat.  Scouting activities had just ended and the hustle and bustle of the center had begun to calm down as the participants began to enter the competitive circle of knowledge.  First it was the younger generation competing for the coveted prize of overall champion of the 2010 Quiz Bowl hosted by Tamar Talverdian.  There were 4 teams from two divisions (Basketball and Scouting) battling their wits and their knowledge of all things.  Once the dust settled the Basketball Team comprised of Eric Baghdassarian, Nicole Baghdassarian, Eric Manouchehri and Michael Saint were named the overall Teen Champions.

Then it was time for the adult teams to begin their battle. There were teams from the Basketball, Scouting, Cultural, Program Divisions as well as a team from the Chapter Executive Board, this time hosted by the Bowl committee chair Abkar Kalantarians.  It was an exciting and fun competition that had three teams advance to the second round (Basketball, Programs and the Executive Board).  At the end of the evening the Programs Division participants (Arlet Davoodian, Hratch Davoodian, Adis Zadoorian, Armenoush Ayvazian, and Moneh Der-Gregorian) were named the champions.

We look forward to next year's rematch between the Divisions.

Alumni Halloween Bash

The First Annual Alumni Halloween Party on October 30th at the Brandview Collection was the hottest and most happening Halloween party in town. Great food, lively DJ, wild dancing and creative costumes in a cool lounge setting were some of the highlights of the event.

But above all, what made this night special was the warm and pleasant company of the alumni and current members and many new friends of Ararat. The purpose of the event was definitely fulfilled as many of us from the extended Ararat family came together for a most memorable night.

Our goal is to continue to assemble even greater groups of members and friends, nurture relationships and engage everyone in the life of our organization.
Kids Halloween Carnival

The third Annual Kids Halloween Carnival was a big hit this year. Ararat Center was booming with adorable kids dressed as princesses, witches, monsters, and superheroes. When asked what he liked about the event, 8 year old Anthony Grakasian said "The parade and the games". Anthony himself was dressed as Super Mario.

The same enthusiasm was evidenced by more than 120 kids who registered for the costume parade and received goody bags and great prizes for best costumes. From the scary to the creative and just plain cute, the parade was a smashing success.

Likewise, parents and grandparents socialized and enjoyed the event watching and cheering the children
and having a blast.
