Christine Kepenekian Joins Hatis Yerevan
A
12 year veteran of Homenetmen Ararat Basketball team and former CSU Bakersfield
women's basketball player Christine Kepenekian has signed a contract with Hatis
Yerevan, the top women's pro basketball team in Armenia. Christine has lead
Ararat basketball team to many victories, including two championship games at
Pan Armenian Games in Armenia, capturing two silver medals in 2003 and 2007 and back to back championships in 2008 and 2009 Navasartian Games.
She went on to be an outstanding basketball player in CSU Bakersfield where
while in a Roadrunner uniform, she became one of CSUB's all-time great players.
She holds 16 top 10 career program records and nine top 10 individual season
records. She is No. 2 on the Roadrunners' all-time leading rebounder list (569)
and is one of just six players to surpass 1,000 career points (1,035).
Christine played
for Armenia in the 2010 FIBA European Division C Championship games held in
Yerevan, Armenia from June 28 through July 3, 2010, and had a remarkable
performance. She averaged 22.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game,
helping Armenia's
national team move up to the European Division B Championship games with four
wins and one loss. She was named the MVP of the tournament.
Hatis
Yerevan Director of International Scouting Carl Bardakian called Christine's
performance "outstanding" and looks forward to her continued success with her
new team. Gia Kazanjian, who is also Armenis's national team coach, heads Hatis
Yerevan and is eager for Christine's return to Armenia to prepare for Euro Cup
games starting on October 28. Kepenekian leaves for Armenia in early September to start
the training camp.
To celebrate this great success, a press conference was held on
September 1, at Ararat Center. Ararat Board members along with Hatis Yerevan
Director of International Scouting, Carl Bardakian, and media representatives
as well as Christine's family and friends were present.
Azad Galustian, chairman of Ararat's basketball Division Executive
committee, conveyed Chapter's message. "Through hard work and dedication,
Christine has been able to achieve her dream of becoming a professional
athlete" Galustian said. "Her achievement is an inspiration to us all and all
of the Homenetmen Ararat Chapter members. We will be following her games and
will be rooting for her success."

Armenia Jamboree
From July 28 to August 13, 17 of our scouts attended the 9th
Pan-Homenetmenakan Jamboree in Armenia which takes place every four years. Our
scouts were part of the 77 member Western United States delegation.
The trip was compr ised of 10 days at camp with Armenian scouts from all
over the world, and 5 days in Yerevan with the members of our delegation. Throughout
the 10 days, not only did our scouts build life-long bonds with each other, but
also with friends within the region, and with fellow homenetmenakans from other
countries.
Scouts from 17 countries (two groups from U.S.) camped in Armenia's
Homenetmen HASK's Buragan campground. The days spent in camp were filled with
enjoyable activities planned to enhance everyone's experience such as quiz
bowl, and games and competitions, and a festival.
Together, the scouts visited many of Armenia's historical sites, among them
Geghard, Garni, Ambert, Tsitsernakabert, Sardarabad, and Khor Virap.
Aside from visiting the sites, the scouts agree that the most moving
part of the trip was, without a doubt, getting to know the other scouts. With
over 570 Armenian scouts present, the trip was an emotional and eye-opening
experience for everyone. The scouts learned how different yet how similar
Armenians from different corners of the world are, and that despite the
distance, we are all one.
The Jamboree exemplifies the spirit of Homenetmen and we are happy that
our scouts were a part of it.

Entanoor Banakoom Scouts Annual Camp
From August 15 through 21, our Scouting Division held its 27th Annual Entanoor
Banakoom at Mataguay Scout Ranch, with about 200 members participating. The
week included a rally, scout games, and campfires. A new endeavor that 30 scouts
took on this year was to achieve the Azgayeen Shkanshan, which translates into
the Cultural Badge. This is an outstanding badge offered by Homenetmen Western
United State Region's Scouting Committee.
Another unique aspect of this year's camp was the Visitation Day. Parents
were invited to visit their children at camp on the 18th and spend a
"day at camp" with their scout(s). The parents went rifling and canoeing, hiked
up to the cafeteria for meals, attended a campfire, shared the camping
experience and bonded with the scouts and leaders. The activity was a hit.
Without a doubt, camp was a blast, an experience that won't be forgotten. |
