Homenetmen Glendale "Ararat" Chapter Newsletter
Vol. 7  Issue 2
March  2010

Greetings!

Greetings,

As nature gets busy rejuvenating and is bustling with activity, so is Ararat with a full swing of new activities, gearing up to meet the challenges of this year. 2010 promises to be a very busy and active year.

It's not business as usual and we see many new faces at Ararat, especially one particular little group that manages to put a smile on everyone's face. Our greatest new addition is our four and five year olds who are here for Jr. NBA Program. If you see them around, just smile but don't make a fuss. They are very serious about their practice time.

We hope that you will enjoy this issue of ARARATLINK. We look forward to hearing from you. Please send us all your questions, comments and suggestions. You can e-mail your correspondence to the editor at araratnewsletter@yahoo.com.

Girls Volleyball Program

The Chapter's Girls Volleyball Program has started the year with a dedication to excellence. The program offers an opportunity for players to receive quality training through participation in especially designed activities and drills that are set to develop individual skills and improve team work.

The committee overseeing the Volleyball Program has a renewed commitment to improving communication with parents and also welcomes consultation with veteran players. This, along with a dynamic coaching approach will undoubtedly enhance the quality of the Program for our players.

Folk Dance Classes

Folk dance classes for adults have been a part of Chapter's ongoing programs since 1998.  Starting mid January Ms. Angel Petrossian has started teaching Armenian, Greek, Assyrian, American, Latin and other line dances every Wednesday from 7 to 10 PM, at Ararat Center.

The participants register for eight weeks.  The course is concluded with a pot-luck dinner celebration and the next eight weeks start immediately.  All chapter members, as well as the general public is invited to participate in this program, which offers lots of good exercise and fun.

D-League Junior NBA Program

Ararat D-League Junior NBA Program was introduced in February. This exciting program is designed for boys and girls ages 4 and 5.

The program offers a low-stress, non-competitive environment where kids can have fun while learning basketball fundamentals. The season begins by teaching and practicing various coordination, agility and balance skills and progresses into actual practice of the game. There is also strong emphasis on cooperation and team work among players.

Practice sessions are held twice a week on a weeknight and on Sunday. For additional information feel free to email D-League at dl@ararat.org or visit our website at ararat.org/dl.

Teen Dance

The first Teen Dance of 2010 was held on February 26 with great success. The General Athletics Division organizes the dance for youth, 13 to 16 year old. 96 of our young members and their guests danced the evening away to the music of D.J. Daz. The next Teen Dance is planned to be held on May 14, 2010.

Haitian Earthquake Relief

In response to a call to help the victims of the January 11 Haitian earthquake, Ararat members generously donated over 500 pairs of men's, women's, and children's shoes. All collected shoes were sent through Sports Chalet to Soles 4Souls for distribution to Haitian people.

By the January 31 deadline, Soles 4Souls collected 1.1 million pairs of shoes for this cause, from donors like you.

Thank you for your incredible support.

Census Facts

The Census is a count of everyone residing in the United States, regardless of citizenship.

Households will receive an "advance letter" in March 2010 informing them that they will soon receive a census form to fill out. Census questionnaires will be mailed to all U.S. households later in March, and people will be asked to provide information that is accurate as of April 1, 2010. Households that do not respond by mail will be sent a second form. By late April, the Census Bureau will deploy census takers to visit all homes that still have not returned a questionnaire, to collect the information in person. Census takers may return up to six times to make sure a household is included in the count.

The census form is easy to complete and takes less than 10 minutes to fill out. The questionnaire asks only a few simple questions for each person in the household: name, relationship, gender, age and date of birth, race, and whether the respondent owns or rents his or her home. The census does not ask about a person's immigration status. The individual in whose name the housing unit is owned or rented should complete the questionnaire on behalf of every person living in the residence, including relatives and non-relatives. There are language guides for more than 50 additional languages.

An accurate population count leads to major funding for our cities. Census data determines how much federal and state funding should go to cities like ours. Each year, more than $400 billion in federal and state funding is given to communities for neighbourhood improvements, public health, public schools, transportation and much more. That is more than $4 trillion over a 10-year period.
California uses Census data to draw the boundaries for Congressional and state legislative districts. Our population figures also determine how many Congressional members represent our state. If our population is undercounted in the 2010 Census, California may lose one of our Congressional districts.

Government and businesses use Census data to plan ahead. Census data are used to determine locations for retail stores, schools, hospitals, new housing developments and other community facilities. An accurate count helps determine how many teachers we need in our classrooms, where to build new roads, and how much funding we need for emergency food and shelter programs, among many other things.

By law, the Census Bureau cannot share answers with anyone, including law enforcement and federal agencies. All responses provided on the 2010 Census questionnaire or to a Census Bureau employee are confidential and protected under Title 13 of the United States Code.  The results from the census are reported in statistical format only. Individual records from the decennial censuses are confidential for 72 years, by law (Title 44, United States Code).
