Silver Beaver Award

Varooj Mirzaians, one of the founding members of  Homenetmen Glendale "Ararat" Chapter and its first Scout Leader,
will receive the 2009 "Silver Beaver" Award from Boy Scouts of America, the Verdugo Hills Council.

The Silver Beaver is one of the highest awards a co
uncil can present to a member.  Silver symbolizes the hair color of the wise scout who receives the award.

Varooj held an instrumental role in joining Homenetmen
Western Region as a district in the Verdugo Hills Council, creating more membership in the Council, while establishing a permenant presence for Homenetmen members in the Boy Scouts of America.

Varooj earned his Wood Badge beads in 1989. Later he joined the Wood Badge staff and continued his activities with the Verdugo Hills Council where he became the Course Director in 1997. Varooj was nominated by his fellow scouts who fully appreciate his accomplishments and recognize him worthy of this prominent award.

He is the first scout from Homenetmen to receive such an honor for his unyielding dedication to scouting and community service, over the past thir
ty years.

The Silver Beaver Award will be presented at the Ver
dugo Hills Council Annual Banquet on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the La Canada Country Club.

We salute and congratulate Varooj Mirzaians and also hope that many more of our young scouts will follow in his footsteps
.

D-League Winter Season 2010

Ararat D-League, an alternative to the traditional year-round basketball program, provides a well organized and high quality youth basketball experience for girls and boys, ages 6-14, regardless of their experience, fitness level, or membership status. D-League is a seasonal program offered three times a year.  Each season lasts 10-14 weeks and includes weekly practice sessions and a minimum of 10 games. Winter season starts January 21 and runs through May 2, 2010.

Due to the program's popularity and requests from parents, this year we are proud to announce the addition of our Junior NBA Program, for boys and girls, ages 4-5. Our goal is to provide a low-stress, non-competitive environment where kids can be active and have a great time. Junior NBA Winter season starts on February 8 and runs through April 25, 2010.

We hope that players will exit our program with, not only a fun and educational basketball experience  but with newly acquired fitness and health habits that will remain with them for a life-time.

Registrations are NOW open for Winter 2010 Season: Click here to register online.

Armenian Library

For years, it's been among Cultural Division's plans to establish an Armenian Library in our Center. 2010 will be the year when this plan will become a reality.

The Armenian Library will start with a small collection of books gathered from member donations last year, among which you may find children's picture books from our beloved Hovaness Toumanian, as well as great works of literature from Raffi.

Our goal is to benefit those who share the passion for our brilliant literature and promote Armenian reading among our young and adult members, alike. We hope to enjoy the support of members, who share our adoration for our rich language, adding to this collection by donating more Armenian books.

The Armenian Library will be open in the Cultural Room and available to all Ararat members.
