Navasartian Games Closing Ceremony
 The
34th Navasartian Games came to a close as more than 6,000 attended
the closing ceremonies on Sunday, July 5 at Birmingham High School.
"The
event keeps getting better and better," said Garnik Abrahamian, chairman of the
Ararat Chapter executive board. "It's about bringing youth together to bond.
The longer they stay members, the better they bond. They become leaders."
Scouts
and athletes from various chapters made their way around the high school track
as attendees seated on bleachers acknowledged their efforts. Some of the
youngest participants, including 8-year-old Onik Avedian waited in line with
his friends to walk the track. Onik enjoyed the soccer and basketball
tournaments. "I like the marching and drumming," Onik said, of the closing
ceremonies.
For
11-year-old Gina Abakians, a first-time participant in the Navasartian Games,
spending time with friends and playing kickball was the highlight of the event.
"I'm also into the group activities and exercise," Gina said.
Boys'
and girls' basketball coach Arthur Rumaya felt the games have a positive impact
on youngsters. "It's what the kids look forward to every year," he said. "As
they get older, they start seeing the difference between competition and
friendship. That's the part that appeals to me."
The
35th Navasartian Games will be in July 2010. |
North Campus Construction Update
We
are happy to announce that the first phase of the North Campus construction
will be concluded by the end of August of this year. As of September, the dance
classes, choir, indoor soccer for the very young, some basketball practices and
the newly started Developmental League will be transferred to the North Campus.
The
second phase of the project which will include asphalt and
striping of the parking lot, installation of a new concrete wall, ornamental
fence around the property, electrical gates, landscaping, parking lighting and
exterior paint, will start in September.
The
Chapter Executive Board is planning to have the North Campus opening ceremony in late
September. Although, it should be noted that during the construction, the table tennis and martial
arts programs continued to meet at the North Campus for their practice sessions.

After the first memorable
camp-out last year, we vowed to make this an Ararat
tradition. Sure enough, the 2nd Annual Family Camp took place in
July, at the beautiful Camp Verdugo Oaks. During two fun-filled days, about 40
families came together to meet, mingle and enjoy a variety of activities.
Everyone found something that suited their liking. It was actually hard to tell
whether the kids or the grown-ups were having the best time.

Of course, no camping is
complete without the campfire and entertainment. This year, kids and parents
alike showcased their talents in songs, dances and performances. The
entertainment came complete with campfire-cooked smores and roasted
marshmallows.
On the last day, as we said au revoir to one another and the campground, we took
with us an affirmation of our friendship and the feeling that time was well
spent in the crisp, fresh air, under the twinkling stars, and at each other's
company. So we left with smiles on our faces, knowing that we would be back
next year.
