North Campus Improvements Under Construction
The long-awaited construction of major facility improvement phases have finally begun at the Ararat Chapter's North Campus. The North Campus is located at 3318 San Fernando Road in Glendale, just three blocks north of the Main Ararat Center. This 51,000 square foot property with an existing 24,500 square foot building was purchased in August of 2007 and after minor modifications has been used for limited and temporary chapter activities for the past 1½ years. A comprehensive development Master Plan including three separate phases for the ultimate development of the North Campus property is underway to support the Chapter's ever-increasing activities over the next ten to 15 years. The current development phase which is under construction will result in the following improvements: * Entry and modern parents lounge/waiting area with new restrooms; * Main Multi-sport Gymnasium for youth basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball, and other sports; * A Smaller Multi-purpose hall for various sports (ping-pong, martial arts, etc.) and large meetings/assembly; * A smaller cultural activities hall and meeting room; * and Chapter offices. |
North Campus Gymnasium Dedication
On April 30th we celebrated the dedication of the North Campus Gymnasium in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Gagik and Knarik Galstian. A major donation by the Galstian family - Mr. and Dr. Edik and Anna Galstian, Mr. and Mrs. Hovik and Seda Aghaian, and Mr. and Mrs. Armen and Aida Norhadian - was made in honor of their parents.
The commemorative shovel was presented to Mr. Galstian signifying the groundbreaking of the Center improvements which are partly made possible by this generous donation. The ceremony was attended by Galstian family, Ararat Board of Directors and various Division Board members and was blessed by the prayers of Father Vazgen Atmajian.
The Galstian family has long been among the most generous supporters of and contributors to the Ararat Center.

Ararat D-League
Ararat D-League, an alternative to the traditional year-round basketball program, provides a well organized and high quality youth basketball experience for all children, irrespective of ability, fitness level or membership status. D-League is a seasonal youth basketball program offered three times a year. Each season lasts 10-14 weeks and includes weekly practice sessions and a minimum of 10 games. Parental involvement is the cornerstone of D-League. We are grateful to our volunteers who coach our youth teams. Moms, dads, aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends, and older siblings are all welcome and may volunteer. All volunteers interested in coaching will go through a mandatory coaches' training and Ararat staff assistance will be provided throughout the season. D-League Mission Statement: The Homenetmen Glendale "Ararat" Chapter's Basketball D-League will create the best family atmosphere for the physical and intellectual growth of our participants through athletics. It will provide a well organized and high quality youth basketball experience that emphasizes fun, friendship, skill development, confidence building and character enhancement, all within the safe and friendly confines of the Ararat Center. Dr. Peroomian's Book Signing
On Sunday, April 5th, Homenetmen Glendale Ararat chapter's Cultural Division held an event to celebrate one of its own. Dr. Rubina Peroomian presented her latest book "And Those Who Continued Living in Turkey after 1915" in Ararat's Baghdasarian-Shahinian hall. The event was attended by past and current chapter members and guests. Dr. Peroomian presented the articles, slides and research done to complete her book. Dr. Peroomian took the audience through the pages with slide presentations and excerpts from her book. Quotes from Turkish intellectuals and writers such as Orhan Pamuk, Noble prize winning author, were selected to show that the Turkish intellectuals accept the fact of Armenian Genocide by Turkish government and condemn their government for its denial.
At the end of her presentation, Dr. Peroomian held a signing for the audience, who left Ararat with a great sense of satisfaction and a different perspective on a 94 year old struggle.

2009 Easter Festival - A BIG Success!
Ararat Chapter's Fundraising Committee hosted its traditional Easter Festival on April 10, 2009, at the Glendale Civic Auditorium. Due to the commendable work of the dedicated Organizing Committee, the Food Court Crew, along with over 150 volunteers this year's Easter Festival was a big success. The event drew over 2100 attendees, who enjoyed a fun filled day with their friends and relatives. Among the highlights of the day was the egg-hunt. The stage was beautifully decorated and attracted over 200 youngsters who enjoyed their hunt for hidden eggs. The game booths were busting with excitement and kept over 1000 young players busy throughout the day. As for the youngest participants ages 5 and below, the "Baby Land" station provided a cozy and safe environment to play and give the parents a chance for a little break! The popular children's singer, Maggie, added to the excitement of the day by encouraging the young audience to showcase their singing and dancing talents. Congratulations to everyone involved and many thanks to our donors who made this year's event possible. |
