Daily Plant Sales

The Garden's volunteers propagate choice garden-worthy plants from the collection to put out for sale on The Plant Deck. See something that amazed you in the Garden? Check The Plant Deck to see if you could grow it at home! We specialize in garden rarities.

All proceeds from plant sales benefit the Garden. This is possible only through the generosity of our volunteer propagators and individuals - like you -  who support the Garden with your plant purchases.

Remember, now is the time to plant!  A few plant suggestions to get you started follow.

Heuchera maxima
Heuchera maxima

The island alum root is a 12" x 12" perennial with spikes of small, white to pale pink flowers emerging in early spring. Native to the Channel Islands, it prefers sun west of the Bay Area hills, but will take part shade and is a good edging plant in a shady border. The large 3"to 5" dark green leaves and spikes of cheerful cream flowers make it appear very delicate but it's surprisingly drought tolerant. This plant is hardy to about 12 degrees F and is a super groundcover under trees.

Calycanthus occidentalis
Calycanthus occidentalis

The spicebush has a reddish-brown fragrant burgundy flower, (spring - summer), that some say smells like red wine. Native to the mountains of central and northern California, it likes sun to partial shade and moist soil. It is tolerant of sandy or clay soils. It is mostly deer resistant but they will eat it when desperate. If planted in shade and given regular water, spicebush can be trained onto a trellis.

Salvia brandegeei (Brandegee's Sage) Dendromecon harfordii

An evergreen shrub to 8 feet, island bush poppy is a highly prized bush that is rare in cultivation. This species is found on Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, and Santa Catalina Islands off the coast of southern California. A wonderful native evergreen shrub clothed with glaucous-green oval leaves. A profusion of large yellow flowers cover the plant from spring into summer.
