Greetings!
Welcome to our new Wonders of Walking eNewsletter. The heading reflects the transition which occurred in early March with a refreshed version of the WOW web site. Our focus is on the value and benefits of walking for pleasure, health, fitness, and performance / competition. Being an advocate for your health includes movement, muscular strength, flexibility and balance. If you haven't visited the web site recently, please do and let us know what you think.
Do you remember your first steps? Have you rejoiced to see a child learn to sit up, crawl, stand and begin the process of learning to take steps. Do you have a special child you've cheered excitedly as they take strides faster and faster? Falling down and getting up doesn't stop them. Their journey is just beginning. What about your journey?

Are You Walking With Ease?
| |
Are you more or less flexible? Do you move with ease? Or, are you feeling stuck or at a 'plateau' with your flexibility? After years of research and studies the jury is still out on if stretching prevents injury. Experts acknowledge a biological decrease in natural flexibility as a person ages. However, decreases in function can also be attributed to a sedentary lifestyle. The combination of aging with a sedentary lifestyle almost always results in muscle atrophy. Researchers tell us that a decline in flexibility means a decline in stability, balance, and mobility. I recommend following the axiom "Move it or lose it!"

No Dieting Allowed
| | Do Not Diet!! This is a timely spring article by Nancy Clark MS, RD, CSSD Not only do fad diets not work, diets commonly backfire and contribute to weight gain in the long run. Read more I enjoy eating a diet of whole plant based foods. My MD suggested doing so 2 years ago, and I haven't looked back. I discovered what has taken a lifetime of enjoying food without worrying about manipulating food. We had been trending in this direction for years. After reading The China Study, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, Prevent and Reverse Diabetes my switch flipped voluntarily.
Another book to help you get started is Dr. Neal Barnard 21 Day Kickstart Program. |
| RECIPE | | This is a very good dish which can be enjoyed by all. I used Farro which was very chewy, and doubled the spices
