The type of underhanded legislative trickery we all hear about has reached the Senate floor. Please call and voice your opinion as soon as you can. There is no time to wait.
A "rider" has been attached to a budget bill that will remove wolves from the Endangered Species Act. The protection of wolves has nothing to do with our national budget.
Representative Mike Simpson of Idaho managed to insert a very damaging paragraph (Section 1713) into HR1, the bill that was just passed in the House and has been sent to the Senate regarding the federal budget. His paragraph, in classic legislative manner that obscures its intent, calls for removing wolves from the Endangered Species Act without mentioning the word "wolf" even once. It's a sly way of blindsiding Senators who don't understand the implications of his amendment. If you would like to read what we are explaining here, we have included Simpson's Section 1713 of HR 1 at the bottom of this document.
As you know, removing wolves from the Endangered Species Act through legislation rather than by good science guts the intent of the act itself, and leaves open a door for removing any species without true consideration of the effects.
We are providing you here (below) a list of the members of the Environment and Public Works Committee of the U.S. Senate. These Senators will be faced with this House bill as early as tomorrow, including the dangerous language that could end the protection of the Endangered Species Act for wolves, and potentially for any other targeted species in the future.
Please take a moment to look over this list and call the office of any Senator you can, especially if you live in a state they represent. Writing letters won't work at this point. You need to pick up the phone. A long tirade isn't necessary; just state your opinion politely. A small effort on your part can lead to big results, but if you want to have your position heard, you must do it now.
We thank you, and the wolves of America thank you as well!
