Local Company Readies for Fertilizer Ban
Top Notch Pest Control Applies Ban to Customer Base
OLDSMAR, FL - May 28, 2010 - In preparation for the June 1st deadline for
Pinellas County, Top Notch Pest Control is taking the summer-months fertilizer
ban one step further and, when possible, applying it to their entire customer
base in neighboring Hillsborough, Pasco, Polk and Hernando counties. "We've been hearing a lot of negative chatter about the
ban's affect on the industry, and from our perspective, it's got both its pros
and its cons," says Michael Carli, who owns and operates Top Notch Pest Control
out of Oldsmar, FL. "Although we're based in Pinellas County, we maintain client
relationships in every county within, as well as outlining, the entire Bay
area," explains Carli. "Because
our technicians are in and out of every county each day, we made the decision
to enact the ban outside of Pinellas County, wherever possible." In an effort to improve water quality, Pinellas County
Commissioners approved the countywide ban in January, prohibiting the
application and sale of any fertilizer containing nitrogen or phosphates. Between June 1st and
September 30th, as well as any time of year when storms or flooding
affect the area, fertilizer-use in Pinellas County is now illegal. Top Notch Pest Control customers likely won't notice a
difference in their landscaping either. "If your lawn is healthy, is fed the
right nutrients and has a healthy root system, all the excess fertilizers
aren't necessary." Carli says enacting the ban is also part of his unique
blueprint for maintaining honorable 'Green' practices. Carli and his team of technicians utilize a 'Less Materials,
Less Often' approach when it comes to pest control and lawn maintenance. This involves utilizing slow-release
products as well as surveying each property and applying a 'protective
perimeter.' "Many pest control-related companies, as well as
pest-control-related products, spin the fact that ingredients are 'natural' and
therefore earn an automatic 'Green' designation," Carli explains. "The primary ingredient in the
majority of pesticides is plant-based and derived from the chrysanthemum, so technically speaking, most pest control
products could be classified as 'natural.'" Carli also points out that any word
ending in '-cide,' means 'to kill' - which also does not equate to a true
'Green' practice.
The ban on nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers continues to
spread, with the city of Largo recently joining 2010 efforts and the city of St
Petersburg preparing for a 2011 start. Bans throughout the rest of the Bay area are currently under
consideration and gaining momentum. The Tampa Bay Estuary Program helped guide the efforts to
enact stricter federal and state requirements to control the levels of nitrogen
currently in Tampa Bay. Studies
show the runoff water containing excess nitrogen leads to algae blooms as well
as reduced water clarity. |
