"I feel like we can't put
into words the gratitude we have for all of your hard work with our son.
You have made such a huge impact on his life, and in the process have become an
integral member of our family! We know that without your unrelenting
efforts and superior direction in our son's therapeutic plan, he would not have
made so much progress in the past 16 months. Specifically, you've not
only helped him to talk and interact with us again, but you've developed plans
for our entire family that make our lives easier on a daily basis. You've
shown us easy ways to incorporate therapy techniques into our daily routine
that have just multiplied benefits from one-on-one therapy sessions.
We've had so many nice people come to work with our son over the past 18
months, yet no one has ever come close to having your level of energy and
dedication to the intense plans necessary to ensure that he will overcome
Autism. We are so grateful that you came into our lives - an energized
expert, dedicated therapist & a wonderful friend!"

Greetings!
Welcome to the February edition of Behavioral Consulting of Tampa Bay's monthly newsletter!
This has been quite the week for autism news. On Tuesday, the British leading medical journal, The Lancet, retracted a 1998 study linking childhood MMR vaccines to autism. (Read the story here if you missed it.) Then on Wednesday, I was pleased to participate in a discussion for Bay News 9's mid-day program, In Depth, hosted by senior anchor, Al Ruechel. Click on the clip on the right to see the segment in its entirety.
This month, we've got some great news and updates on insurance coverage for ABA therapy as well as tips on keeping your special Valentine safe.
Also, mark your calendars for Tuesday, March 9th - we're participating in a fundraiser for Autism Speaks at the restaurant, Cosi located at the Shops at Wiregrass. Cosi has recently been certified as an 'autism-friendly' restaurant and all of the proceeds from an on-site raffle, as well as 20% of all food sales between 4pm and 8pm, will benefit Autism Speaks. Come out for some great food for a great cause!
As always, if you have any suggestions on future topics, items or upcoming events you'd like to see in a future newsletter, please let me know!
Best,
Kelley Prince, M.A., BCBA President, Behavioral Consulting of Tampa Bay

Valentine's Day Goodies Opportunity to Practice Fine Motor Skills
Valentine's Day tends to be as much about the candy as it is about the Valentines that are given out.
Chances are, your child may be handing out Valentines to everyone in his or her class and this social activity presents a great opportunity for kids to practice their fine motor skills. By filling out the 'To' and 'From' areas on each card, kids have an opportunity to practice their writing skills as well as signing his or her name. This can also help by practicing writing skills using classmate's names. Parents can begin the process by outlining each recipient's name on the cards and then supervising while their child independently completes the cards by 'tracing' the letters of each name. Allergy and Sensory Needs
As with many holidays come the special treats. Remember that many
children on the spectrum may require gluten-free (wheat and other grains) and casein-free (milk and
milk products such
as cheese, butter and yogurt) diets.
Always
check the ingredients before giving a child with food sensitivities
anything that may trigger a reaction. Check out this link for suggestions on some gluten-free, casein-free treats.
Also, sensitivities
aren't just limited to edibles - many on the spectrum may have
allergies or reactions to certain scents, flowers and pollen.

Behavioral Consulting of Tampa Bay About Us
Behavioral Consulting of Tampa Bay
implements Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) programs with an emphasis on verbal
behavior. Our skill acquisition
programs, customized for each child's learning needs, focus on evoking language
and communication, self-help skills, compliance behavior and appropriate peer
and social skills. We
provide discreet trial teaching in addition to natural environment teaching,
while using errorless learning techniques. To maintain a consistent level of quality, our Board
Certified Behavior Analysts oversee programs and evaluate and document progress
every 4 weeks.
Behavioral Consulting of Tampa Bay
compared the rate of development in 18 clients who were between the ages of 2
and 7 years old during the onset of services. All received our intensive instruction averaging 10 hours a
week for 5 months. We found, on
average, the group more than doubled their
original skill set. Based on these findings, we're
confident that all children, regardless of skill deficits, diagnosis, or
behavior, can learn skills and develop behaviors never before thought possible
if a quality behavior analysis program is implemented.
