New Decking Finishes / Millwork
Deck finishing is good business. Homeowners who have invested in a beautiful deck are interested in keeping it that way. Renewing the finish in the spring and again in the fall gives the best protection against summer sun and winter moisture damage. This maintenance work is an opportunity to pitch accessories and upgrades like decorative post caps, pergolas, privacy screens and gazebos.
Ring's End stocks the best DECK FINISHES available, including the Sikkens line and Benjamin Moore's new two-coat ARBORCOAT system. "Deck finishing is trickier today than it was in the past," according to Sean Gleason, the Paint Sales Manager at Ring's End. "With the high solids content of today's deck finishes and the different types of wood decking available, it's easy to make costly finishing mistakes," he says. "We encourage contractors to come in and talk with us about upcoming deck finishing projects so we can make sure they have the best products for the job."
Below is more advice from Sean to keep your customers happy and your deck finishes first rate.
Check site conditions carefully. The type and condition of the decking and the amount of sun and shade at the site all factor in the prep work, finish choice and application time required for best results.
Do not underestimate the prep work. The deck surface must be cleaned and (in many cases) sanded to expose open wood pores that can effectively absorb the finish. You may even want to test-finish a small section of decking to make sure the absorption and appearance are right.
Take time to educate the homeowner. Explain how your surface prep will help the finish penetrate into the wood and provide a more long-lasting protection than a "bargain" finishing job that's likely to leave a sticky surface film that won't look good or last long. Remember the rags. Most deck finishes are designed to go IN the wood, not on it. Any finish that still remains on the wood surface after about 15 minutes should be removed. |
