The More You Know:
Decking Essentials

For any kind of decking project, there's no better place than Ring's End --for inspiring ideas, expert advice, and the best construction and painting supplies in the business.

decks

Before you lift a tool to begin working on your deck, there are some things you should keep in mind to ensure your deck stays pristine and safe for years to come.

Here are a few helpful hints for your deck's construction:

Start with good connections

In woodwork, connections often limit structural strength and many deck failures lead back to the connections. Fasteners can corrode or wear over time, so avoid transferring load through fasteners.

Avoid smooth-shank nails to avoid nail pop-ups

Over time, repeated exposure to moisture can cause smooth-shank nails to withdraw from the wood and pop up. Using deformed-shank nails or screws on the floorboards guarantee your fasteners stay where they belong- in the wood, not sticking out.

Once your project has been completed, you can follow these care tips to keep your deck in the best condition possible.

Cleaning your deck

The natural color of wood on even weathered decks can be restored through the application of deck cleaners, brighteners, or restorers. These products do not add color, instead by removing dirt and mildew buildups the natural color of the wood can shine through. Care should be used to avoid damaging the surface of the wood so make sure to scrub gently.

Refinishing
Even with the best care, over time your deck will need to be refinished. As the original stain fades, the wood underneath becomes vulnerable to degradation by dirt and mildew. Refinish your deck properly before the old protection has worn away. Proper surface preparation and cleaning is the key to successful refinishing of your deck. Make sure that the surface is clean and free of all debris before you start staining. Many stains require a dry surface, so keep in mind that you may need to let your deck dry after preparation.
