Affordable Kitchen Makeovers

Kitchen Photo 1

What are my options for giving my existing

 kitchen a fresh new look?

With all the hard work and heavy use that goes on in a typical kitchen, it's not surprising that these spaces need to be renovated or redone from time to time. If a major kitchen makeover isn't within your budget, don't give up on your dream of a new kitchen. There are several affordable makeover options that can give an old kitchen a totally new look. These low-budget makeovers are also low impact; they will only put your kitchen out of commission for a day or two. Here are a few affordable kitchen makeover strategies to consider:

Option #1: Paint & Hardware.

There's no doubt about it: Paint provides maximum makeover impact for minimum cost. Older kitchen cabinets with a stained finish will look new after paint has been applied and new handles are installed. For an antique look, a glaze can be applied over the new paint. The Paint Centers at Ring's End have the best primers and durable, easy-to-clean finish coats that will keep your "new" kitchen looking good. As for new handles, pulls and hinges, Ring's End has the most comprehensive selection of architectural hardware you'll find anywhere. And here's something to keep in mind: You've got plenty of freedom in choosing new handles and pulls, because your choices aren't limited by the screw holes for the original hardware. If necessary, original screw holes can be filled, sanded and covered with paint and new holes can be drilled.

Option #2: New Countertops.

At Ring's End, we are set up to get any countertop job done quickly and flawlessly, because we handle everything from material selection to measuring to fabrication. If you're interested in solid surface material, visit one of our showrooms to check out the latest options from Corian. You'll be astonished at the variety of colors and patterns available. Engineered stone is also worth considering, and Ring's End offers a comprehensive selection of this quartz composite material from leading manufacturers like Cambria, CeasarStone, and DuPont. What about the great feel and traditional appeal of wood butcherblock, or the dramatic tones of polished granite? Yes, we can do these too.

In addition many homeowners choose to install a new kitchen sink and faucet set along with new countertops, so make sure to check out these items too.

Option #3: New cabinet doors & drawer fronts.

Another way to achieve the look of new cabinets without tearing out your old ones is to replace cabinet doors and drawer fronts. The original cases stay in place and the original hardware can be reused or replaced. This strategy enables you to change door and drawer front styles so that the cabinets have a completely new look. We can make this makeover go smoothly by taking all the right measurements, helping you find just the right door and drawer styles, and going over hardware options if necessary.

2011 Kitchen Design And Decorating Trends

Kitchens are a very important part of the home, the majority of homeowners considered their kitchen to be the center of activity in their homes. Which is why it is important to truly understand the impact of the design and appearance of your kitchen.

Color is coming back into the kitchen!  Lighter stains and brighter painted surfaces are being seen in more and more homes. Cabinetry with a colorful finish adds a burst of personality to your kitchen walls. With a variety of woods and finishes, it is easy to personalize your kitchen with the styles and colors that inspire you. This year's kitchen color trends are bringing back the basics - creamy browns, deep blues and reds. Darker colors will be replaced with colors and styles reminiscent of farmers' markets and country roads.

When it comes to the "right" countertops for your kitchen, a custom countertop can do wonders for your kitchen design. If you want beautiful custom countertops without heavy demolition and construction come in to Ring's End and learn about our custom counter top shop from any Kitchen Associate.

Last, but not least, understanding the importance of lighting and its layout in the kitchen is a must! Task lighting is an important part of any kitchen design. Key locations for task lighting include underneath the overhead cabinets and over the island - anywhere you'll be chopping, slicing and reading recipes. The pantry is another place where you'll want bright, focused lighting.

Now more than ever homeowners are looking for ways to add storage and make the most of every square foot of space. Being organized in the kitchen is a must!

Beware of.....
 Ice Dams
Ice Dam Diagram

Ever wonder about that block of ice that forms at the edge of your roof in the dead of the winter?

Hopefully you don't have this problem, but if you do, here are some things you should know. Ice dams are fairly common, but they have been especially abundant this year's brutal weather.

They are generally caused by inadequate attic or roof insulation which allows heat from the house to melt the snow on the roof. In sub freezing temperatures, the melted snow runs down the roof and freezes on the roof overhang where it is cold. The frozen water then collects on the overhang, creating a dam that prevents the remaining water from running off of the roof. Eventually, the water gets backed up and seeps under the shingles and enters the house creating further problems.

Ice Dam on Roof

Identifying an ice dam is one thing, but removing it and preventing future ice dams is another. Ice dam removal should be left up to a professional. The appropriate tools and fall protection should be used to prevent further damage to the house, or worse, you. In many cases, if water enters the house through an ice dam it destroys the insulation. In this case, the insulation would need to be replaced. Any penetrations such as recessed ceiling lights and skylights should be sealed up with spray foam as they are known to short circuit heat directly to the roof.
Always ensure attic vents are functional and air is able to flow into the soffit vent and out the ridge and gable vents.
