Come See Markham's Rejuvenated Australian/ New Zealand Garden
Australian & New Zealand Garden
(sign surrounded by Grivellia audiflora)
After a few months of planting, weeding and mulching, the garden is really starting to shine. We've added a range of new plants from both summer-dry Western Australia as well as semi-humid Eastern Australia. The garden is a testing ground for some new plants yet to be released into the USA as well as tried and true species not often seen in our area. The goal is to demonstrate which plants work best and to give local gardeners an idea of how to use them.
Six (small scale) species of Eucalyptus and three Acacias have or will be planted as well as numerous species of Grevilleas, Banksias and Hakeas. Evergreen Lomandras are used extensively as a cohesive design element to tie all the plants together. They are a drought tolerant grass-like plant that never requires cutting back or additional care.
Much of the garden is now labeled, thanks to volunteers from Markham and Chevron as part of the Week of Caring. More signs will follow allowing visitors to leave the garden inspired by what they have seen. Stop by when you get a chance and see how we're growing._____________________________________________________________________
Next Markham Nursery Saturday Sale is October 15th
Our next to last Saturday sale for 2011 is October 15th. We will have a selection of interesting natives and perennials ready for fall planting as well as several sale tables with prices as low as $1. We also expect some vendors. Remember to take advantage of our expanded parking in the lot in front of the nursery. Save the date!
The Pleasant Hill Garden Study Club (PHGSC) has routinely featured and discussed a "Plant of the Month" (POM) at its monthly meetings for the past 3-4 years. While many of these POMs are native plants, there are also some Australian/New Zealand (see above) and Mediterranean plants and all were specifically chosen for their success in members' local gardens. This is native plant planting time... or close to it. Many of these plants are available in Markham's Nursery. You can see these POMs on the PHGSC's web site at http://www.phgsc.com/plant_o_month/index.html
