New Ideas for the Cutting Garden.... with a southern twist
| A Southern Hemisphere arrangement picture: Aloha Protea Farms |
Firstly, let's dispel some myths about floral arranging. Yes - you can work magic without the use of roses and Baby's Breath and No - you don't lose points on your Man Card for participating! The last point is a contentious issue with proponents polarized enough to teach the Hatfield and McCoys a thing or two about disagreements. But I digress.
I'm relatively new to the art and have found it a great way to bring the garden inside. You may have noticed from the first paragraph that I have little interest in traditional plants, long featured in floral arrangements. Instead I prefer to use the diverse range of plants from the Southern Hemisphere. Proteas, Leucadendrons (Conebushes), Leucospermums (Pincushions), Grevilleas and Anigozanthos (Kangraroo Paws). All are easy in the garden and last up to three to four weeks in a vase. For fillers (those not as showy, but designed to highlight the species above) I use foliage plants such as Adenanthos (Woolly bush), Eucalyptus and Grevilleas.
Not convinced that these exotic plants will work in your garden? Keep an eye on the International Garden as we've been busily adding a large range of these species over the last year... keep the clippers at home though.
