Lessingia filaginifolia 'Silver Carpet' (California Beach Aster)
Our selection of California natives continues to grow and with the addition of new display beds, we have room to show them off. This week we feature a low growing native, Lessingia filaginifolia 'Silver Carpet', commonly known as California Beach Aster. This groundcover is a butterfly magnet and is attractive to bees too. It only grows to about 1 foot tall forming a silvery dense mat that spreads to 4 feet wide. It has lavender pink daisy like flowers with yellow centers. It will thrive in full sun if given occasional water but will withstand some drought and light shade. Like many natives, it can go dormant in the summer if given no water. Another big plus for our area is that it tolerates clay soils. Beach Aster is not only useful as a groundcover dense enough to keep down weeds but also as a low plant to cascade over a wall or as part of a rock garden.
