Rudbeckia 'Toto Lemon'
Last week we talked about Gaura 'Cherry Brandy' which is for us, a new and different variety of one of our bestsellers. Continuing in this experiment of offering different varieties of popular plants, this week we feature a new Rudbeckia . Members of the aster family, Rudbeckias are native to North America and typically come in shades of oranges, golds, and yellows. The largest group of Rudbeckias for the garden is Rudbeckia hirta, commonly known as Gloriosa Daisy. They come in a wide range of heights - we have a few taller varieties but our biggest number is of a dwarf variety called Rudbeckia 'Toto Lemon'.
A couple years ago, we had many, many Rudbeckia 'Toto Gold' plants available and we sold all of them. It was easy to understand why when you saw this cheerful plant profusely blooming in the middle of summer. We now have ample supplies of its sibling Rudbeckia 'Toto Lemon' available in our 4" deep pots for $4. These plants are very dwarf and compact growing only to 10"- 12" high by 8" wide. They have deep green foliage and 4" semi double daisy like blooms in a lemon yellow shade with brown center cones. Flowering starts in July (ours are blooming now) and lasts through fall. These plants like full sun and not a lot of water. Because of its size, Toto Lemon works well in containers, rock gardens or in the front of a garden bed. The lemony yellow color of this variety should combine well with lots of different flowers for several more months.
