Coreopsis 'Sunfire'

Ashe weather finally starts to warm up, many of us may want brighter colors for our summer gardens - and not many flowers evoke summer days as much as perennial coreopsis.  Coreopsis (common name Tickseed) is native to the American southeast and to Mexico. It is a very undemanding plant that bears daisy like flowers in shades of yellow, pink and even orange. Coreopsis will grow in hot spots in the garden and not require much water. One of the varieties we have is an European award winner (Fleuroselect Quality Mark) named 'Sunfire'. It bears bright yellow single daisy-like flowers with burgundy red centers and serrated edges. It will bloom for a long period and then return next year to bloom usually before other Coreopsis have started. Prolonged blooming will be greatly enhanced by periodic deadheading. Sunfire grows to about 18"-24" tall and 12"-18" wide and is deer resistant. These bright, cheery plants  are great in the summer border and can even be used for cut flowers.

Editor's note: the volunteers tell me that our Salvias are taking off with the warmer weather. Salvia 'Hot Lips' is especially ready for your garden.

"Saving the Geranium Family"

The Geranium Family is large and contains many beautiful members. But economic pressures on nurseries, the fads and foibles of the plant buying public, as well as habitat loss, are bringing some members of the family to the point of extinction.  It is estimated that over 10,000 named cultivars of pelargoniums have been lost in the last 150 years. Some cultivated forms of hardy geraniums are going the same way.  We will look at the factors involved in the acceleration and decline within the family and learn what we can do about it. And we will learn how to propagate the weird and wonderful to insure their survival. There will be plants for sale.
