Euphorbia.... many great plants for the garden

Euphorbia is a large genus which includes over 1600 species, among them one familiar to all of us - the poinsettia.  Out in our gardens, ornamental euphorbias are frequently used for their colorful foliage and contrasting bright bracts.  At Markham we offer several varieties of euphorbia which vary in color and height.  These euphorbias have already started their early spring flush of growth and color and can add an instant impact to the garden.  Two of the more interesting euphorbias we have are relatively small and therefore are very good additions to the front of an existing flower or shrub bed or in a container.  Both like full sun and well drained soil and are unappealing to deer.

Euphorbia x martinii 'Tiny Tim'

Tiny Tim has the appearance of a miniature version of  Euphorbia martinii.  It only grows to about one foot tall in flower with a very compact habit.  Flowers are a soft chartreuse with red centers and appear for a very long period of time starting in spring.

Euphorbia 'Blue Haze'

This hybrid euphorbia has powder blue fine leaves that are covered with yellow green flowers that are softer in contrast than some of the other euphorbias.  It has dense foliage on a plant that will grow to 1 feet tall and 2 feet wide and because of the color, will be attractive year around.  Might try combining it with dark foliaged plants.

Editor's Note: I'm constantly amazed by the Euphorbia genus... the above are two great plants for almost any garden in our area... and if you are a succulent collector, there are plenty of other euphorbias as well with some of the most interesting forms and colors....CHEERS
