Plant of the Week
Cistus salvifolius (Sageleaf Rockrose)
Although it is getting late in the year, there may still be time to plant before the rains really kick in. Planting shrubs now gives them a head start in the spring and a chance to become more established before summer heat. Markham's non-native shrub collection is fairly limited right now. but we do have a good supply of one of our drought tolerant Mediterranean plants: Cistus salvifolius or Sageleaf Rockrose.
This Cistus is a low grower that spreads quite a bit (2 ft high x 8 feet wide). It has abundant 1 inch white flowers with yellow centers in the spring.
Sageleaf Rockrose is very drought tolerant but would appreciate a deep watering occasionally during the summer. However it does require well drained soil.
Its habit and toughness make it a good candidate for a groundcover on a bank or in a dry garden area. You might try combining it with lavenders or rosemary for a striking effect. |
